Hello All,

I am in the market for a smart phone and I'm considering the Motorola Droid X.

It comes with an 8 megapixel camera, dual LED flash and 720p video.

"Crappy little plastic lens" comes standard so I won't be able to pry it off and duct tape my Tokina 11-16 on board (try losing THAT phone!).

Does anyone here have any :magnify: experience with them thar "smart" phone cameras?

Spill the beans why doncha!

Smoochies, :love2:

I have an iPhone 4, so I don't know about the Droid X. I've been pleasantly surprised with how good it is.

There is a guy in my office with a Droid X. I'll ask him how he likes the camera.

As much as it pains me to give a favorable review to any Apple product, the iPhones have the best cameras that I've seen in any smartphones. IMO the iPhone 3 is the best of them.

Personally though I like the HTC Evo overall. It's on my Christmas list, now that I've committed to having a cell phone again. LOL.

I was in the market for a point and shoot camera. Then I got my iPhone 4 and I quit looking at point and shoots. It does a great job outside and I like that I can override the flash indoors. I also uploaded the Hipstamatic app and have been having a lot of fun - it comes with "interchangeable lenses" and film types. FUN FUN FUN

I have a HTC Incredible running Android. It's camera, in a word, sucks. It's okay in a pinch I suppose but requires touchup of every photo to make them even presentable. White balance is a particular problem.

the iPhone has a much higher quality camera IMHO but I still went with the Android because of AT&T and their quality problems

I have the samsung galaxy s and love it. The screen is incredible for pictures and video but the camera is only 5mp which is more than fine for me as a backup. It runs on the android os but theres also iphone emulators if you want to run a particular iphone app. Personally I wouldn't trade my phone for 2 iphones, but that's just me.

That being said, I thought this was kind of funny/cool

Love my Droid X. I just got it a few weeks ago and is my first smart phone- but I am highly impressed. The camera and video is fun but all the features really are cool. Very handy little gizmo. My wife got the Droid 2 which she likes also.

Here are some pictures-

I tried to upload a video to youtube but it looked horrible. It actually looks really good on my computer. Here it is anyway.

I'm looking at the pics then stop and say "HEY, that's MY Whole Foods!" :rotfl2:

Thanks for the reference pics :thumbsup2

Gdad-i just played it on my phone and it looked pretty pixalated but after I clicked on high quality it looked really good! Granted it's only on a 4 1/3 inch screen, but even for that, it looked really nice.

Mrs Groucho's got the original 5mp Droid and the camera is pretty mediocre... I've got the eNV3 (too cheap to pay for data!) and its 3mp camera is not too bad; actually quite good for a cell camera though obviously junk next to almost any PnS. I'll probably be getting a Droid2 for work pretty soon so I'll have a little more experience with that, but I'm not expecting much from the camera. (I require a real keyboard so I can't even consider the X, plus it's a bit bigger than I'd like.) Oh, I should point out, Mrs Groucho LOVES her Droid!

I find the concept of an 8mp cell camera pretty silly - the display you're looking at it on is more like 1, maybe 1.5mp... and most cell pics rarely make it any bigger than Facebook makes them, which is really small. Trying to view them at 100% will be an exercise in depression. :)

Like Amy I'd been looking for a point and shoot to keep in my purse for just in case then I saw the pics off of DH's iphone4 and the video is pretty impressive too. It even does well inside without the flash at a closer distance. I'm already trying to figure out ways to modify the flash to my advantage.:lmao: Oh and it does HDR with semi decent results. Will be getting my iphone4 here shortly and skipping the PnS.

I have both the original Droid and the Droid X. It's fine for grabshots, not a replacement for a DSLR. I'd still rather use a good point-and-shoot over any camera phone, but it's convenient for when I don't have a camera on me. I actually like using Vignette (the paid version), a camera app, over the stock camera app, for creative filters/effects/framing. I also like PicSayPro for photo editing on the phone.

Ive heard good reviews on the new 8mp Phone cams.. Nokia just released the 12mp N8, Ive seen some amazing samples from it online..I have a Nokia N900 and I'm pretty happy with the photos...here's a few samples..

I'm due for an upgrade in the next couple of weeks, so I'm in the same boat as you. The Droid X looks awesome!

I would have a bought a N73 as I prefer the Candybar form factor. But until the networks start offering unlimited data access at a realistic price then I can't do with out the WiFi, just a shame Nokia left it out. So for now I'll stick with the N80, crap camera aside it is near perfect for me, It has a better fantastic screen than the N73 and and I no longer have to take a newspaper to the loo, I can sit and read the BBC website over WiFi instead:)

I have the iPhone 3Gs and for the most part it takes pretty good pictures. The video is also not bad. Its really not all that different than the throw away one time use film plastic camera's. Outdoors it takes very good pictures. Indoors it does ok, with the iPhone 4 the flash will give you extra light for about 5-8 feet (just like the one time use camera's). I've gotten a lot of good pictures to share on facebook and email/text to family & friends.

Most of the video I take is for work for when other people screw up and I have to prove they screwed up. It works well.

Most camera phone files are going to be less than 1MB in size so you can't do a lot with it, but in a pinch it does work....

Droid X Pictures from today. I personally think the camera is lacking, of course, I typically shoot with a 50d, but after some post processing in Lightroom, it's ability to capture detail is good enough for some nice pictures.

I will tell you however, that the droid like to post pictures rotated 90 degrees on facebook and has some hunting issues when taking pictures. That being said, it's macro capabilities are impressive!

I have a 3G iPhone. The camera is lousy compared to a real camera, but I guess it is OK for a phone. I usually use it when I don't have a real camera handy.
