If you had a few friends/neighbors over to play board games or cards in the evening (after supper time) what would you serve as far as snacks and drinks go?
chips and dip or sweet stuff....or ?
would you serve alcohol? I know that a particular neighbor likes wine. I like fresh food, like avocado based dip as opposed to something like canned bean dip.
What do you have on hand for times like that? what would you want to be served?

Things I have on hand are usually chips and salsa, maybe veggies and a ranch dip. If I planned ahead I'd probably make my famous guacamole and spinach artichoke dip too. Maybe cheese and crackers. I'd probably stick to dips and savories rather than sweet stuff.
I'd serve wine, mixed drinks, maybe beer if beer drinkers were coming. Pop for the non-drinkers.

I would do one sweet thing (like brownies or bars) along with something savory like chips and dip. We don't drink much so I'd probably stick to regular lemonade or iced tea. If kids were coming, I might buy pop and if I knew a specific beer or wine preference of the guests I might buy that.

If I had to use what I had in the house without planning, my guests would probably be getting saltine crackers with cheese and iced tea.

I would do some appetizer like foods like jalapeno poppers, pig in a blanket, nachos, and some chips and quacamole/dip. Stuff like that, and yes I would serve alcohol.

I like to do something nicer like a dip (guacamole, spinach, etc.) along with some a couple of small bowls on the table where you're playing - one with sweets (peanut m&m's) and and one with salty snacks (chex mix).

Alcohol would depend on the friends. Regardless I would also have some fresh lemonade, sodas and ice water available.

Have fun!

This sounds fabulous!! And very much like what I'd serve. I'd do some heavy hors d'ouerves like mini eggrolls, taquitos, etc. And everything listed above. I'd probably make sangria, but have beer/cokes/bottled water as an alternative.

we do game night often - used to even more-so when our D&D group was active. Really need to get a new group going...

Anyhow - favorite snacks were:
Popcorn
Doritoes with salsa and cream cheese (this is actually really yummy, throw a brick of cream cheese on a plate and cover it in salsa, dip the chips)
Buffalo wings and mozzarella cheese sticks
Potstickers and eggrolls
Veggies and ranch dip
Brownies
Rice krispie treats
Fresh fruit platter

Also drinks - lots of them! But non-alcholic 99% of the time, we don't hardly ever drink. Iced tea (sweet and un-sweet), juices (3 or 4 kinds), sodas, and sometimes the fixin's to use the blender and whip up yummy virgin daiquiris, slushies, smoothies, etc

We alternate game night between our house and our friends' house. We always have:

Chips and salsa-a staple for these kind of events, IMHO. ;) If I was a guest, I would be psyched for guacamole as well!

A platter of cut up raw veggies and ranch dip. You can pick this up already made at most supermarkets and Costco.

If you want to go a little fancier, pick up a baked brie and crackers.

I like to set out cookies later in the evening.

Beer or wine would be a nice touch as well. I usually ask guests to bring the alcohol if they ask me what to bring. People's tastes in alcohol vary so much, I would rather my guests be happy with their drinks. I do like to keep some beer and wine on hand anyways though.
