I have ridden it twice that I recall. Once back when it first opened and I was a kid riding alone (Dad and sister in seat behind). The seats were made for two people to ride and be belted in together. The CM didn’t tighten the restraint to account for one person in the seat and I was left hanging on for my life through the whole ride. I was terrified. The second time I rode was after they went to the three individual seats but I still didn’t enjoy it, partly because that first ride was so awful. I am not a coaster fan and I blame that in large part to my first Space Mountain experience.

I like the DL version best. Preferably when it's got a May The Fourth Star Wars overlay on it, but original version is just as good. One of my favorite attractions.

The WDW version feels like the Matterhorn at DL and it's harder to hear the music.

I’ve ridden both, but not in many years. Loved it as a kid, not as much now. I got a Space Mountain T-shirt on my first trip to WDW in 1976.

I remember those seats on the original MK ride. It was a bench seat that you straddled, and like you say, fit two people in each section, with just the loose seat belts, and hand rails on the sides. The person in front essentially sat in the lap of the person behind. For a single rider, especially a child, there was lots of extra room in the compartment to rattle around. My only memory of the ride at Disneyland is that it has the different side-by-side seats, so not as rough.

I have been on the WDW version many many times. It's a must-do for me! Although now that I'm in my 40's, I wrap one arm up by my head and hold the back of my neck/head in my hand for the whole ride. Not taking a chance there

The reason for that is the re-use of The Matterhorn engineering - it was intended to be ridden like a bobsled! 🙂 The Matterhorn has also cahnged, though it actually has fabric seat belts instead of the T-bar.

I was 11 and Space Mountain DL was my first roller coaster ever. We went to DL after our swim meet in San Diego.

It had only been open for about a month, so the line was about 3 hours long. In the middle of the ride, I told my dad I wanted off. By the time we finished I wanted to ride again. But the line was still 3 hours, and we still had tons to do in the park.

I’ve only been to WDW but I’ve ridden this one a lot. Howevr, I know have some physical issues so I have passed it up lately. I love it though!

Other. Rode both DL and WDW. Love DL’s side by side seating version. Hate WDW version where you feel like you’re going to fall out in single bucket seat.

I try to ride this ever day I am there at least once.
Mostly for the nostalgia reason.
Its a rough coaster in general, not all that great, and it breaks day far too much for my liking.
