What's your opinion of chimichangas?

I like them, but only once in awhile - they have a tendancy to give me a stomachache

Poll coming!!!

I don't think I've had one since Chi Chis went out of business. Our local Mexican restaurants have so many other wonderful items on the menu that I have never ordered one.

I don't order them as my diner, but if I order a platter that one comes with the platter combonation, I will eat it. If I remember correctly, it is usually a chicken chimi. Like powellrj, the local restruants around here have so many other options I just like better, that normally I don't get a chimi.

its pretty much a fried burrito!

yummo! I'm from the South, so fried=yummy in my book! (well...most of the time...) :thumbsup2

I love Chimichangas! The mexican restaurant right by my house has a soft and a fried option. I usually get the soft to save calories, but the last time they brought me the fried by mistake. Ooh boy was that yummy!

I love them, but Mexican food is my favorite anyway. :)

Chimichanga
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chimichanga, or chivichanga, (pronounced chimmy·CHAHN·guh) is a deep-fried burrito that originated in Northern Mexico (Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua) and later became popular across the border, especially in Arizona. Flour tortillas are folded into rectangular packages and filled with a wide range of ingredients, most commonly beans, rice, cheese and shredded meat. They are then deep-fried and usually served without a sauce, but may be accompanied with salsa, guacamole, sour cream or cheese.

According to a legend, a waitress in a Mexican restaurant had left a leftover burrito sitting on the counter, and Flin, the owner and cook, accidentally dropped it into the deep fryer. She was about to say "¡Ay, chingado!" (a curse word), but her young nieces and nephews were present, so she censored herself and said "¡Ay, chi... michanga!" instead. When she sampled the result of her mistake, she liked it so much she decided to name it after her outburst and put it on the menu.

The origin of the chimichanga is subject to some debate, and there are some that link it to Tucson's Mexican restaurants. In addition, Macayo's restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona claims that its founder, Woody Johnson, invented the chimichanga some time in the 1950s. However, many stories refer to a cafeteria in Ciudad Juarez called El Charrito as the first place to add the item to its menu in 1929.

Pop culture references
The fictional character Deadpool seems to have strange obsession with chimichangas, though he has not been seen eating them (preferring enchiladas instead). Still, he is often found repeatedly saying the word "Chimichanga", claiming that he likes the sound of it and that he can say it in five different languages.
In the film Meet the Fockers Gaylord "Greg" Focker's father, Bernard Focker has a fondness for chimichangas. This is a recurring joke in the film. One example being Bernard and Roz Focker's answering machine tape records more than Bernard intended including him pleading for a chimichanga while his wife reminds him that they give him gas.
In an episode of the Nickelodeon cartoon CatDog, All You Can't Eat, both Cat and Rancid Rabbit refer to the term "chimichanga" as a "beautiful word".
In the movie Napoleon Dynamite, Summer Wheatley denounces Chimichangas in her speech to be School President, calling them "chiminichangas."

I love them, but don't eat them often.

I can't stand most any Mexican food... this sounds like it would be top of the list of ones to avoid for me ;)

I've never had one but I would like to try one sometime.

Chimichangas are pretty great (hey, it's deep fried and has meat--what's not to like?), but, like Powellrj said earlier, the myriad local Mexican restaurants have much more interesting (and flavorful) offerings to sample. Like carnitas, for example. :thumbsup2
