Yesterday was my MIL’s birthday, so my DH and I took her a birthday cake last night. I just bought one at the grocery store bakery and the normal everyday flavors are typically chocolate, yellow, white and sometimes marble. There’s other flavors available if you want to have one custom made, but the grab and go flavors are the ones I mentioned. So, let’s talk about your favorite flavor out of the four I mentioned…..

In a perfect world….
If it’s your birthday, and someone was picking up a bday cake for you, what flavor would you want?
What flavor of frosting? (standards are chocolate, white, whipped cream)
(multiple-choice)

For Me…..This is so tough for me, because I love chocolate cake with regular white icing. But then again I love marble cake with chocolate icing. I’m going with chocolate cake with white icing, and I want it to be decorated pretty. White icing always looks more pretty decorated than chocolate icing (IMO). I also want some of those icing flowers that are hard sugar - I don’t see those much anymore - I wonder why? :scratchin

Good morning! Happy birthday to your mother-in-law! 🎂

Given the choices, I chose chocolate with whipped cream icing. I do have an awesome buttercream frosting recipe that nearly tastes like whipped cream, though.

I tend to home-bake birthday stuff if the celebrant is in the area. For me, given my choice, it would chocolate cream or banana cream pie. DS always asks for a mixed berry pie (raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, blackberry). DH's favorite is black forest cake (complete with kirsch), and DD's is red velvet.

If I have to get a bakery cake I would want chocolate with white icing but I would much prefer maybe a cake with some kind of filling in between the layers like raspberries or strawberries or like a pudding or something those are really good and just like you I want the cake decorated really pretty with flowers or some kind of pretty decorations I know you don’t see those anymore and I don’t know why

Out of those flavors, I would pick up a chocolate cake with whipped frosting. I never really like store chocolate frosting.

My favorite would be chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. Not many people tend to agree so I usually get a cupcake from a local bakery one my birthday in those flavors.

Happy birthday to your mother-in-law! From the grocery store cakes, I would choose chocolate cake with white buttercream. However, there's a Japanese bakery near us that has a strawberry cake which is delicious. (It's almost like an angel food cake with sliced strawberries between the layers and a whipped cream frosting. So good.)

Our family generally does homemade stuff for birthdays though, and I always choose ice cream pie. Cake is OK, but there are other sweets I prefer... and ice cream is at the top of the list.

Favorite cake is German Chocolate but I'm not picky, so chocolate cake will suffice and let's go easy on the frosting because when I add the ice cream on top the texture gets weird if there's too much frosting.

I was a kid whose mom always made my cakes. As I got older, we would use culinary magazines to broaden our horizons with cake flavors. As a parent of a child with severe peanut and tree nut allergies, it became crucial that I step up my cake game to ensure that she had safe cake options. I also have a thing for elaborate cakes, but not the price tag that comes with them. So, it meant also learning to incorporate this into a sturdier cake type that can hold up to sculpting and stacking. I am not opposed to more basic cake flavors and am usually fine eating whatever, although, I can be more picky with frostings (absolutely no whipped cream and not a fan of the lighter buttercream varieties). Oh, and none of the boxed cake mix cakes that taste heavily of preservatives.

Here are some of our home favorites...

Banana cake with spreadable chocolate ganache
Cinnamon swirl cake with cinnamon butter filling and cinnamon cream cheese buttercream
Apple cider cake with spiced buttercream
Cookies and Cream Cake with Oreo Buttercream
Cookie Butter Cake with Dulce du Leche buttercream
Coconut cake with pineapple or passionfruit buttercream
Mexican chocolate cake with marshmallow buttercream
Mint chocolate cake with mint chip buttercream
S'mores Cake

My ideal birthday cake is white cake with whipped cream icing and lots of strawberries to go with it. But since I always share my birthday with my son, it is a yellow cake with chocolate icing and a pudding filling.

My favorite basic cake is yellow cake, choc frosting. I have been spoiled rotten the last 5 or so years, however - we have a cottage baker friend who lets my imagination go wild and she delivers whatever flavor combo I can dream up. My favorite, thus far, was an almond cake with amaretto mouse, topped with a homemade fresh cherry jam frosting. Indescribable.
