While my kids watched PBS Sprout when they were that age and enjoyed a lot of things on there that drove me batty, they did not care for Barney. I was not a fan but would have endured it if it had been something they enjoyed.

I have a nephew that watched the show and I hated it.

In the late 1990s I saw a demolition derby at the State Fair. One beat up car had a large Barney attatched to its roof. Another car hit this car, Barney went flying, and a third car ran over it when it landed. That got the loudest cheer of the night.

I was about 5 when it came out, but I was not a fan. I was more into Lamb Chop. I did have younger cousins who liked it.

My oldest daughter now 32 was obsessed with Barney. I’m pretty sure we had all the VHS tapes and I may still have them. We even went to see Barney live. She was Barney one year for Halloween and her sister by default was Baby Bop.

For Me……I fully admit that I always loved Barney. My DD25 loved him when she was little 💜. She watched Barney all the time, we listened to Barney CDs in the car and we had almost every Barney book. Because she loved him so much, it made me love him. I always felt the Barney messages were positive and taught good lessons to children. I can still sing Barney songs word for word - they are imbedded in my brain for life - LOL!
I look forward to sharing Barney with my grandchildren one day.

DD30 ADORED Barney, and that was fine with me! I found him somewhat irritating, but that didn't really matter; the show was for kids DD's age, not for adults! She still has her Barney stuffie, and also "be-bop" which is what she called Baby Bop. I sang the "I love you, you love me" song to her every night at bedtime, for YEARS, along with Winnie the Pooh songs.

DD33 was into real dinosaurs. We even took her to see Jurassic Park when it came out because she knew all the scientific names. Could she say her ABCs? No. But she'd correctly identify a triceratops, bracchiosaurus or t-rex and every other dinosaur on the poster on her wall. She was a real hoot at museums. We were on a family outing at the science museum once looking at the dinosaur skeleton when an older aunt sided up to her (at 3 years old) and said "Now, that's not Barney" and she promptly replied, "No, it's a tyrannosaurus rex eating a triceratops!" DD looked at Barney like an imposter. :P

Now, DS.... he was never into Barney, but turn on Blues Clues or that Bear in the Big Blue House... and he was hooked.

I personally do not care for Barney. His voice is annoying as all get out to me.

My daughter went through a brief stint of watching Barney when she was a toddler. (Thankfully, Disney Junior won out.) However, when she did watch PBS, I would take Barney 100x's over this little brat that came on immediately after Barney ...

I couldn't stand Caillou - I did my best to not have my girls watch him - LOL!

That's the guy! Jeremy watched him.

Barney the dinosaur…..so many opinions about Barney.
Some love him and some want to punch him :lmao:
So I ask….

What is your opinion on Barney?
Did you have kids or grandkids that watched him?
Do you have kids or grandkids that watch him now?
(multiple choice)

Same with me, slo!! My kids were among the “first generation” of Barney fans. They watched the DVDs when they came out, and watched a little when it became a tv show. Both of my kids are now in their early 30’s. :faint:

My kids had the first version of the Barney doll. 💜💜

My DD loved Caillou! She was devastated when we lost the channel or PBS Sprout went off the air or something, though she was well into elementary school by then. She also liked Barney, though mostly the "older" shows from the 90s that we watched on VHS handed down from her cousins. For some reason she liked those better than the "newer" Barney (I believe he did change his look a bit).

I am not a fan of Barney. I think there are so many better kids' shows.

My son (now 23) was never interested in Barney. My daughter (19) liked him. She found out about him through daycare. For a while she was a "wheezer" and had to sit for 20+ minutes/day to get a nebulizer medicine treatment. Barney would make her sit still and zone out during the treatment -- better than anything else we found -- so we got a couple of DVDs (first from the library and then purchased). My husband had once said "We will never have Barney in this house!" but he relented. You gotta do what you gotta do. Thankfully, the Barney stage was pretty short.

DS watched and enjoyed it. We had some of the videotapes, music tapes and a few Barney-themed toys. The songs were catchy and upbeat.

I never minded the show since I thought the message was always positive!
This is how I feel. Never understood all the hate.

I was too old when Barney came around, and now it's old to my kids, but my youngest daughter did find it when it was on Prime or something and she watched it for a stretch -- mostly holiday-related specials and an on the farm one. It was fine, harmless. Nice old school songs. There are way more annoying kids shows out there (looking at you Caillou).

My kids watched it a bit. But they were more into Elmo and Wiggles then Barney.

I thought the Barney show at UO was so nicely done! Never got why people would say to not take young kids to UO - they had Barney!

Oh Lord, Barney was my daughter's hero. She had a stuffed Barney, she had Barney sheets, she had a Baby Bop sweat shirt. She's 32 now and her most traumatic life experience was when we went to Disneyland and stayed at the Hilton that is across the street from the park and they had a kid's get together in the lobby with a fake Barney...the most pathetic looking purple dinosaur I have ever seen.
So we at the very least, we tolerated Barney.
I was just checking, and our local PBS station operates 4 channels total now, including a "kids" channel and Barney is NOT on any of the 4 channels. Appears Barney now is only available on Netflix.
My son says my Granddaughters don't watch Barney, but the 4 year old may have seen him at Daycare.

No thank you lol....my niece, little brother, and eventually my oldest all watched Barney...my youngest never watched it thankfully!

The biggest thing I remember about Barney is that women stopped wearing magenta in the 90s.

I think it was new when my children were very young, and they did watch it for a while. I don’t know that I ever really watched the show. I definitely heard it at times and maybe saw a little here and there. But you have to give him credit, he became a big deal and was practically everywhere at the time.
