Today is National Dog Day :dogdance:
Dogs are such wonderful companions for many of us. If you are allergic to them, like me DH, you can have a breed that is hypoallergenic, which is good. Dogs feed on your happy energy and share in your joy. Dogs know when you’re sad and they comfort you by just being there to pet and keep you company. They truly are fantastic additions to the family. They can also be a challenge and cause a lot of headaches - it’s not all sunshine & rainbows all the time. So let’s talk about our dogs today 💗🐶💙….

Do you currently have any dogs?
If yes….how many?
If no…..have you had dogs in the past?
(multiple choice)

*Please post a picture of your current dog(s) and past dog(s) for us to see your four footed family member.

For Me……Yes, we currently have our 15 month old Havanese named Otis. I swore we’d never get another dog after our Sophie passed away, but on 8/18 last year we roamed a local pet store and there he was. He spoke to me in a way I can’t explain. There wasn’t any other dog there that did this - just him. I had to see him and then had to have him. He is now our baby and is spoiled more than any dog we’ve ever had, but we’re empty nesters now and have the extra money to spoil him more than our other dogs. We love him so much, and he’s filled a huge void in our house. I miss my DD22 being here and our little Otis keeps me company with her being away. In our 30 years of marriage, we’ve had 4 dogs - Sampson (German Shepherd), Indy (Black Lab), Sophie (Yorkie) and now Otis (Havanese). Below are pictures….

I don’t have an available picture of our Indy. I’d have to dig into some photo albums for those. We only had him for year. He went to be a bomb and arson dog for an Indiana police department. I don’t know where he went, but I was told by the trainer that trained him that he was doing well and loving life - this was in 2003.

I don't personally have any dogs at home, but I do care for dozens at the shelter. Some of them have been around so long that they feel like mine though. Medical or behavior issues can be problematic at times with adoptions, so they'll probably stay with us until they pass. We do our best to keep them happy and satisfied. They're pretty good at teaching all the new comers the ropes and showing how things go around here, so it's all good. We have an ever changing, but also very consistent pack, and it seems to work pretty well with the pack mentality.

Huge dog person here - I currently have a male lab and he’s four years old it’s definitely not been rainbows and sunshine but some days it definitely is I don’t know what I would do without him I love him so much everybody thought I was crazy to get another dog but like at your age why would you get another dog because they make wonderful companions and I can’t imagine having alive without a dog in it

I didn’t get to have a dog growing up but my neighbor had dogs so I played with those - I have had more than five dogs in over 40 years I’ve had a few jobs set involved taking care of dogs I’ve showed dogs in obedience I’ve trained dogs I’ve run training classes for dogs and I currently work for somebody who is massively into dogs and he had a top winning dog in the United States
dogs are wonderful companions ymmv but I just can’t imagine my life without one

Good one, slo! I love dog threads. :goodvibes

These are my current two, like Mutt and Jeff, lol. The little guy is the leader, he’ll be 12 soon. We are not exactly sure how old the Shepherd is, they said he was 8 when we adopted him 3 yrs ago (his owner had died), but no way was he 8 then, or now, more like about 5 now. (When we got him his teeth were still white and he was chewing shoes!) He is my seventh German Shepherd. We went to a smaller type dog (a Toto) after our last two Shepherds wound up on wheels, but I missed having one, and my heart would just about break if I saw one out and about. So we got him and he’s a good dog. But the little guy with the big personality has captured our hearts, too, more than we could’ve imagined. He’s easy to travel with, too. Thanks to my son’s baseball days he’s been to every state along the eastern coast, Maine to Florida!

My two with my son’s dog in the middle. Seems appropriate here.
(I have no idea how DS made this picture, lol.)

I love dogs, and grew up with Mastiffs, Bernese & Danes. My mom always wanted a big dog as a kid, so when she had her own farm we got big dogs!! Fast forward to now, We have three pups, honestly I think 2 would be a easier to manage number for us but it is what it is...we have a Dane who is 8 w/ non-treatable cancer (kinda thing where he'll be doing great till all the sudden he's not...but he's doing great now!), a Bull Terrier -she's 3 1/2 & a French Bulldog who is a year & a half old. Our current Dane is supposed to be our last 'big dog' as we get older and are traveling more, but truth be told I simply can't imagine my life without a big dog:sad1: in it.
Our Dane we bought from a respectable breeder, the Bulldog we got from a rescue we volunteer/foster with and the Bull Terrier we sprung from a shady as hell breeder we talked into releasing her when at 9 months old it was found out she couldn't be bred.

We've got a grand dog as well

I don't like dogs and wouldn't consider having one. I am fine around others' pets, but dogs are not for me.
:goodvibesHave a dog but don’t want one” should have been a poll choice. A couple of years ago now, my elderly sister was widowed quite unexpectedly. She ended up moving in with us for a time and of course there was no question that her dog would come with her (a 4 year old Morkie who blessedly doesn’t shed or yap). When she was ready to transition back out on her own, the situation wasn’t right for her to take him with her. By this time he and our DS were crazy in love with each other and DH was firmly in “like”, so he stayed.

He and I coexist with the understanding that I’ll ignore him if he ignores me, and it works out fine, but no, I never wanted a dog. And here we are, 5 days away from taking our DS to college out-of-province, so I guess for a time, DH will be in charge of him. :dogdance:

ETA: He looks almost exactly like @slo ’s Sophie but is all fawn coloured without the black.

Our dad did not allow us to have pets when we were kids, so I wasn't used to them. I never wanted a dog. But all three of our kids got dogs when they grew up and out. So we dog-sat their dogs. That only confirmed the fact that I didn't want a dog. But we did have a cat.

Our next-door neighbors have a Havanese, and he is the cutest thing ever. :)

This is Baxter, an 11 lb retired muti-champion Silky Terrier show dog that we adopted from the breeder/owner shortly after he stopped competing.

After living a very restricted and different lifestyle for 4 years that some people might think is cruel, he’s now having to adjust, not always successfully, to a normal dog’s life.

He’s very smart and has a very cute and gentle personality. We love him like our child and spoil him rotten.

When I was born and my mom brought me home from the hospital, my dad brought home a Samoyed puppy. That was 78 years ago and I have never been without a dog or dogs in my life. I currently have three and my daughter across the street has six. I just got a Chihuahua puppy named Cinnamon. I couldn't imagine life without a dog.
