This is a topic that I love, because I’m a big fan of dark chocolate. We’re not talking about about dark chocolate that doesn’t tell you how much cocoa is in it, we’re talking about the really dark chocolate, which is 70% cocoa or more. Dark chocolate is like liquor - there’s average liquor and then there’s hard liquor - dark chocolate is kinda like too - you got the easy yummy dark chocolate that’s in candy and baking, and then there’s the hard stuff that’s bitter (sometimes super bitter) and kinda earthy tasting. The 70%+ dark chocolate is an acquired taste that some people don’t even want to try to acquire (my family) because it’s just to bitter for them. Then there’s some people that will force themselves to acquire a taste for it, because the health benefits are worth it for them. If you didn’t know that super dark chocolate has health benefits, then the below info is for you……

There’s definitely a lot of benefits to eating dark chocolate, but just remember it has to be the super dark chocolate. My suggestion to people is to start off at 70% and after you get used to that then try 80% and keep moving the percentage up. Lindt makes a bar that is 100% cocoa, which I’ve never tried - I didn’t know this existed until right now. I have had Lindt dark chocolate that is 95% and that’s a little too bitter for me, but I will eat it when my family buys it for me. I’m curious today if you all eat super dark chocolate for good health. Let’s unwrap that dark chocolate bar and tell us today……

What is your opinion of super dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher)?
Do you eat it on a regular basis?
If yes…..what percentage do you enjoy best?
(multiple choice)

For Me…..I love my daily dark chocolate and my favorite is Aldi’s 85% dark chocolate. It’s very popular by me, because there are weeks that they are sold out, so when it’s there, I buy several of them. One year I gave it up for Lent and I really missed it, because I truly do eat it every night after dinner.

I love dark chocolate, even the 100%. I really don’t like milk chocolate as it just tastes so sweet and like a watered down version. My kids when they were little referred to my very dark chocolate as “dirt” chocolate since it’s very earthy. It’s nice that since I’m the only one in my house that likes it that dark I know it’s always waiting for me instead craving it and someone else in the house has eaten it 😜

I like certain dark chocolate candy, but some taste WAY too bitter to me. When I eat it is because I like the taste, not because of any supposed health benefits. In baking, you can use a variety of types of chocolates depending on the recipe, how much sugar you add and what your taste preferences are. Baking dark chocolate is marked with a %, not familiar with the term 'super dark', so you can buy what works for a particular recipe. The highest % chocolate isn't going to taste very good for eating and mostly used as an ingredient when cooking/baking. The whole idea of dark chocolate being something 'healthy' for you seems more like clever marketing, even if chocolate contains all of those supposedly healthy compounds, not clear of the actual amounts. Have no idea how many POUNDS of dark chocolate you would have to eat to get all of those health benefits........................LOL.

Reminds me a bit of the recent TV ads for some sort of candy made from beets. Apparently you can claim just about anything in your ad as long as you call it a 'supplement'. If you watch closely at the tiny print that races by on the bottom of the screen, it will cleverly say 'this product hasn't been approved by the FDA and isn't intended to cure/treat/prevent any illness'. Basically that says there is no proof for any of the claims they just made in their ad.

I like dark chocolate. My favorite is Tony’s or Theo. There is also an eco bar that has a bit of peppermint that is really good. As I get older and have to watch my cholesterol I try to only have the 70% or over dark chocolate when I want a treat. My doctor was the one that told me about all the benefits and how much it can actually help which feels like cheating compared to the rest of the diet that helps. 😂. When I was younger I did like Dove chocolate a lot. I was bummed when I learned that dove dark chocolate is actually semisweet chocolate which seems like false advertising. lol.

I'll eat it and it has certain baking applications where it's the better option to balance out something that's overly sweet, but I'm not a fan on its own. As someone who prefers things on the sweeter side, it sort of tastes like a blend of cocoa and dirt. 🤣 Obviously, it's the more healthful option and I will sometimes keep it around to fulfill a craving without going off the deep end, but it's really not something I totally enjoy.

You can get dark chocolate bars in the 70%’s at Trader Joe’s. Sometimes I’ll pick a few up. I used to be dark chocolate only - have been enjoying really good milk chocolate as well lately. I’m a chocolate lover! 🍫 💞

I like dark chocolate in baking recipes and I do like Dove and Hershey dark chocolates, but I rarely buy them. If I’m going to eat chocolate, I prefer milk chocolate.
