Deer meat has a pretty distinct taste (IMO) and some people absolutely love it. Deer meat is not something that’s readily available unless you know a hunter. I think our town butcher has it in his meat store because he’s a hunter - I’ll have to look and verify that with myself next time I go there. My neighbor is a big hunter and he has venison in his freezer all the time and uses it a lot in chili, which I have tried. Here’s a little info about deer meat…..

Gotta love A.I. info - always full of good facts. Now that you’ve read that, let’s find out today…..

Have you tried venison (deer meat)?
If yes….,what is your opinion of it?
If no……would you like to try it, if given the opportunity?

For Me……I have tried it and I’m not a fan :sad2:. Until I lived next door to my neighbor, the hunter, I never had deer meat. I tried it with an open mind, but I do believe it had that “gamey” taste that people talk about. Would I give it another try? Maybe. My DH likes it and will always eat it when my neighbor has it.

I have been eating it since I was a little kid absolutely absolutely absolutely love it wish I had a hunter that could give me some My father was a deer hunter so I grew up eating deer meat and I love it my father had a good friend that was a big game hunter so I have ate all kinds of different meats and I’m a big fan of a lot of different kinds of meat But I absolutely love deer meat
Now could I go out in the forest and kill little Bambi no I could not I don’t even like helping to skin a deer and chop it up I have had to do that several times and it makes me cry But I’ll eat it I just don’t wanna see it with it’s fur on I know that sounds hypocritical I get that I truly do But if I had to go get my own meat I’d have to become a vegetarian🤣🤣

Technically, I've tried it once, because someone we knew put it in a chili or stew or something they were very proud of, and I didn't want to be rude.

But it's not something I would actually seek out on my own.

Yes, I have had venison. My husband is a deer hunter and tries to get at least one deer every season. I like doe meat, but not buck meat. Buck meat, especially an older one, is definitely more “gamey” tasting. A younger doe is more tender and mild tasting. We get our doe meat ground mostly, and use it just like hamburger. Much less fat than beef burger, in fact when I cook a pound of ground venison I don’t even have to drain any grease off. I use it for goulash, spaghetti sauce, in soup, etc. We love it.

Yes, I've tried it, more than once. I don't like it at all. My ex was a hunter so we had all sorts of wild game in our freezer. I wouldn't even cook it for him or allow his mother to cook it in our house because I could even smell the gamey smell. My boss once swore he could cook it where I couldn't tell the difference so I told him to try. He made two different batches of chili and sure nuff, I knew the difference. To be fair, I also don't like fresh beef. Ex-hubby and his brother's used to buy a cow and have it butchered (country Ga. guy) and I couldn't eat it because it was too gamey for me. I don't like quail for the same reason. Or fresh milk. I want all the ized going on. I can and have eaten fresh chicken, my Granny had chicken houses and I won't go into detail but either she or Daddy would just go out in the house and grab a chicken and that was supper. Current hubby's family (south Ga) raised hogs for slaughter, I didn't eat any pork from their house.

I've had venison sausage. It was flavored with maple syrup, and I very much disliked the sweet taste. I would be willing to try unsweetened venison, though, if someone else served it. ;)

I've had foods that used ground venison as a ground beef replacement and it was okay. Not something I'd eat regularly, but it wasn't bad. I have also had, and enjoyed, venison jerky. I don't hunt, so venison would be an expensive option so it's really not something I've ever looked into regularly. The venison I have tried was from people who hunted and processed the deer themselves. Much cheaper for those that hunt and have the ability to do something like that for sure.

I had the opportunity once many years ago, when I found out the "roast beef" was in fact venison I struggled not to vomit and thankfully never took a bite. My brother is a bow hunter and invited my parents and I to the big "banquet" for the hunting club he belonged to. All the hunters chipped in game from their adventures. My SIL warned me that some of the dishes you had to be careful because there was the risk of a stray pellet from buckshot. I ate vegetarian that night. My mom tried a few things and had a lot of fun.

The stray buckshot pellet is very real in my experience. I've had to remove so many of them over the years. It seems some people process the meat much more cleanly and carefully than others. Not an enjoyable experience if you're not expecting it to possibly happen. I learned to eat that type of meat very carefully after it being an issue so often.

I've had venison sausage and liked it fine. I've also had an elk burger when I was in North Dakota, which was also good. I don't remember either tasting super gamey.

No, I don’t like it. It has what we always called a “gamey” taste. Where I grew up, people only hunted for game if they had to, to put food on the table. My Dad raised cattle so we had no need.

My dad is a hunter. I had all the meats as a child. I don’t eat much meat as an adult and I suspect the two are related. I do not like it.

Never had it but growing up I can recall my dad going hunting with some of his buddies and would bring home a rabbit or pheasant. All of it tasted way too gamey for my likes. If deer is the same, would have no interest in that either.

I do not think I have ever had it - if so, I can't remember. It is not appealing to me though.
