In honor of my DH’s birthday today, we are discussing birthday cake :cake:

When it’s your birthday, what type of cake do you like?
OR
When it’s your birthday, do you like something other than cake?
OR
Do you like something different every year?

For Me…….I love birthday cake that my mom makes every year. It’s just a box mix with icing in a can - nothing special, but I love it ❤️. It’s always marble cake with chocolate icing. My DH loves having a key lime pie every year - just a frozen one from the grocery store. DD20 loves an ice cream cake every year - either from Cold Stone or Dairy Queen.

I like a chocolate, chocolate one from Sam's.
If they don't have it I would make a Hershey chocolate cake with Hershey chocolate frosting.....all made from scratch

DH like red velvet with cream cheese frosting. I make it.
Same for DIL,
DS likes ice cream cake, Dairy Queen, Baskins, or grocery store.
DD likes gelato cake from Frost.
DGS likes chocolate.
DGD changes every year

White cake/chocolate icing for me
Pineapple Upside Down cake for DH

Youngest DS (Feb) ......chocolate/chocolate icing
Middle DS (Mar)......white/white icing
Oldest DS (Jun)......cherry cake/cherry icing. Yes, it's pink but he's 6'6 and he absolutely loves it! :teeth:

All home baked.

Oops forgot grandkids:
Oldest loves only ice cream cake....chocolate
The other two will eat anything!!

German chocolate cake, just one slice with ice cream. Grocery store version is fine.

I like ice cream pie for my birthday treat. My mother (82) usually makes it for me.

My husband likes a special made-from-scratch yellow cake recipe with store bought chocolate icing (it pains me to put store bought icing on a from-scratch cake, but that’s what his family always did/what he likes).

My son and daughter like to switch it up and I usually make what they want (unless they specifically request something store-bought. One year my daughter wanted cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes, so we bought one.) For the last several years, my son has asked for the same ice cream pie I get. I make his.

For me-store bought cake, which must be white cake with buttercream frosting. Our local grocery store makes the best cakes! My son prefers the same for his birthday. Our daughter always has an ice cream cake from DQ. My husband doesn’t have a preference, but usually a store bought cake.

A white cake, usually from Sam's, with white buttercream/cream cheese frosting.
It's all in the frosting for me. Got to be buttercream or cream cheese.

I voted other because I rarely have one. I don’t care enough to bake one myself and DH just doesn’t think about it. I remember having cakes a couple times when we were camping with family, it was nice but it’s just not something I expect.

I’d prefer a homemade cake but usually don’t get one. My dh is definitely not a cook - even boxed cake. My birthday is right after my son’s birthday so technically we are just coming off having a cake. Sometimes I’ll make cookies or brownies. Dh tried buying cakes in the past but they weren’t the greatest but he tried!

Our official family birthday cake is a Boston Cream Pie made from scratch. The recipe is from a Betty Crocker cookbook and includes a dinette cake (yellow cake), split into two layers, a layer of vanilla custard and chocolate frosting. My son's birthday is just 4 days before mine, so we usually share the cake and this one is his favorite. I always make it.

Key Lime Pie 🥧- excellent choice!!!
I prefer chocolate cake with chocolate peanut butter icing homemade- i usually make it ! I will take a chocolate ice cream cake but no one ever gets one ! They are yummy !!!
DD prefers Apple Pie homemade- again guess who’s cooking ? Yup me
Growing up never allowed box mixes or store bought always had to be homemade so it’s a habit in me that I make things. Yes I’ve done an ice cream cake they are pretty easy to make dangerous habit to get into 🤣🤣🤣

No preference for me. You can stick a birthday candle in whatever dinner I happen to be eating and I’d be content.

The rest of the family usually requests a chocolate mint ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. Sometimes my son just wants a pumpkin pie.

It is just me, so I don't bother with a cake. On those few occasions where I might be with family, there might be one, but as all of us are in our sixties or later and live in different parts of the country or even in different countries, family get togethers are few and far between anymore.

Birthdays are a big deal in our family, so we have a family get together for everyone's birthdays. My DH and I have birthdays that are only a week apart, so we share a get together. My brother in law is an amazing baker, so he makes homemade cakes for all the birthdays.

My birthday is in the middle of the summer and we don't have a/c, so I don't usually bother heating up the kitchen to bake a cake for ANYONE. If I do make a cake, I'll make a traditional red velvet with cooked frosting, or a Pig Pickin' Cake (yellow cake w/mandarin oranges in the batter, iced with a whipped cream/pinapple frosting).

Birthdays are pretty much just a regular day for me except I refuse to cook. Not that we go out either. I just order the food and pick it up. 🙄I’m 61 and can count on 1 hand how many birthday cakes or anything else I’ve had in the 42 years I’ve been married. It’s just not special if you have to buy or make it yourself so I don’t bother.
