We have a real wood burning one in the pub area of our basement; it's only used on Christmas Eve for atmosphere. Now that the basement is fully carpeted it's not chilly anymore down there so it's not really needed for heat.

I love real fireplaces, but we're renters and the original fireplace was bricked over (there's still the brick hearth sticking out from the wall). So we have a high-end electric fireplace entertainment center situated exactly where the real one used to be. It's a reasonably convincing effect. I also have a small electric fireplace in my room, but no hearth, and my dad has an electric fireplace in his room that looks like a potbelly stove.

We have a gas fireplace with fake logs. I love the ambiance. Our dog likes to be close to it on cold winter days.

My house was built in 1979 with a wood burning fireplace. The heat all went right up the chimney. We bought it in 1983. After a few years we put an wood burning insert in with a fan. Used that to heat for about 10 years. Then the ash dust started bothering my son's asthma, and wood prices soared and we switched back to the Heat Pump only to heat. This summer we pulled out the wood burning insert and put in an electric fake fireplace insert with a heater built into it. Putting in a new wood burning insert that meets current environmental laws would have cost about $7,000 and wood is still very expensive. All electric house so natural gas not an option, and natural gas is very expensive here. Electric is cleaner and cheaper but now it is mostly an ornamental fireplace. We will see how much we use it to heat.

It was great for ambiance & heat but we were hardly ever home long enough to use it. The work & mess got annoying & we hadn’t used it in years. We had it replaced with a gas fireplace when we remodeled 3 years ago. I love it. We went from a brick & rough wood to sleek tile, glass pebbles & ceramic stone. So much nicer to be able to turn it on & off quickly. We can adjust the flame, blower & lighting with a remote.

Fake logs electric, there is a switch that also puts out some heat or you can just use the flames for decoration.

Every living space and all the bedrooms have fireplaces. About 3 have wood burning stoves, but the others are open fires and burn wood or coal.

We have a real wood fire burning fireplace (with gas to help it get started). We use it alot in winter, DH loves making a fire.
