It seems like every time you go shopping, the cashier is asking you if you want to open up their store credit card - most times they offer you a discount as an incentive. Some of us will say yes, and others of us will say no. There are some perks to having certain store credit cards, which is often nice to have, but what’s not nice to have is having your credit score go down to open one. Some of us have several of these cards, and others of us do not. So tell us today……..
Do you have any store credit cards?
If yes…..do you use all of them?
How many do you have?
(multiple choice)
For Me……I do have store credit cards, but not many. I used to have a lot of them when I was younger - I was opening them all the time. Not to speak badly of my parents, but they did a terrible job teaching me about finances and being financially responsible. After I got my credit card debt under control, I closed many of these cards. Today I have Kohls, which is only used if the cashier tells me I have to so I can get the discount (some cashiers allow me to use my Chase SW, which I’m grateful for) and then it gets paid off with the next statement. I have a Home Depot card that’s only used when we make a large purchase, like our current refrigerator, so I can get the free financing for 12 or more months. I have an Amazon card that’s used for the same reason as The Home Depot card - currently our patio furniture was paid with this for the free financing for a year. Thats it - all the other ones were closed

Now that my DD21 is an adult, she knows all about the downfall of opening to many credit cards - I’ve been teaching her about this since she was 18 years old. She understands about her credit score and how important a good credit score is. She currently has one credit card in her name, which I opened a few years ago to help build up her credit score. Every week I pay for my Aldi groceries with it and then pay it off every month. As of now, she has no desire to open up any credit cards herself. She carries our Chase SW card with her (it has her name on it) and when she needs something she uses that and pays me back. It’s a win win for both of us - she has no debt and I get the points
