As I drive around, I see more and more personalized license plates. They are fun to look at and some of them are very creative. I’m sure several of us have one, and I encourage you to not post it on here, but I do encourage you to tell us the theme of your license plate(s). Are personalized license plates something that can be done in other countries? For our DISers that are not in the U.S.A., please let us know. So, let’s get to it……

Do you have a personalized license plate?
If yes…..how many in your household right now?
(multiple choice)

*please post your license plate theme
*please post your state
*please post your country, if not in USA

For Me……I have a personalized license plate in Indiana and it’s PotC themed - I love it! I’ve gotten several comments about it at gas stations and parking lots. My DH also has one which is auto racing themed and my DD21 has one that is Chicago Blackhawks themed.

I'm in the UK and we have personalised number plates over here too, although their overall design and style is nowhere near as fun as those in the States! The theme of my plate relates to my full name, although its not something people can easily guess - it just looks like random letters and numbers. Even friends & family haven't easily understoodwhat it means.

For info, these are the types/styles of personalised plates people can have in the UK and this site provides more info too:

I don’t have one never have but I enjoy seeing them and trying to figure out what they’re saying some of them are extremely creative and cute

I don't have one, never had one, not interested in having one.

My car is full of other decorative things....all Disney related anyway

I've thought about it on occasion (I developed a monoclonal antibody that basically "made" my former boss's career... I'd use the clone designation because it was MY idea of how to develop it and I did all the work of designing, creating, developing, testing, etc... basically it is MY clone) but am too cheap to pay for it!

Never had one and don't see the need. States where I have lived charge an extra fee which seems like a waste of money to me.

I do not have one, never have had one. Some that I see, like when at a stoplight, are pretty creative and/or funny.

Didn't you used to have Disney antenna toppers, Nancy? Or am I thinking of somebody else here? But without traditional antennas anymore, no place to put them.

When I lived in IL I did have personalized because waaaaaaaay back in the 90's it was free if you ended it up with a number. Eventually they DID start charging for that however. It was a variation of my name ending w/a number.

Now I have the Indiana "Pet Friendly" version, some randomly assigned number that I do not know, that has a dog and cat on it.

Silly question but do you have to pay for personalised plates in the States or does it vary?

I think you have to pay in all/most states, but the amount varies. In some places it’s a small extra fee and in others, it can be substantial. There also seem to be different “levels” of personalization.

For instance, in my state, you can get a logo (from a select list of sports teams, schools, charities, military branches, etc) that goes on your plate for a small-ish fee. You can choose your letters/numbers (with some restrictions), for a larger fee, and if you want the logo AND to choose your letters/numbers, it’s quite expensive.

My dad always had personalized plates on our family cars growing up (they weren’t exciting messages.. they were various combinations of his initials and meaningful-to-him numbers.) I assumed I’d get a personalized plate when I got my own car till I saw the extra cost and decided it was not worth it for me!

Never had a personalized one. Closest I've ever come is getting a Save the Manatee plate when I lived in FL, but I didn't pay the extra for personalization. Honestly, while I do have some personal decals here and there which might make me stand out, I prefer the greater anonymity with random numbers and letters on my tag.

My husband got a personalized license plate back when they were first introduced in Illinois. It is just letters that represent a funny phase based on a popular comedian's expression. People laugh when they see it. :) I used to have a funny one, too, but never renewed it.

Our state has:

Specialty Plates (extra fee) that are themed, colleges, support for organizations, sports teams, fraternity, military .... there are hundreds to choose from. One of my cars has an ANTIQUE tag as it is 54 years old.

Prestige Plates (extra fee) where you can pick your numbers/letters to say what you want. I have one of these on my Doom Buggy. It references Leota. We don't have front plates, so my front is a vintage HM plate. My car is black on black and "decor" is HM.

Thus far I have never had a personalized (where you specify the letters/numbers to be displayed) plate. There are also dedicated (have an ongoing yearly fee that supports a special interest) and specialty (organizations such as an alumni group) plates.

Around here the personalized plates don’t seem as common as they used to be a number of years back. But there may be more of the specialty and dedicated plates, and there are definitely lots more of them to choose from now.

It’s fun to try and figure out what the personalized plates mean. And there are some I just never catch on to!

I have one. I live in Virginia and you know what we love? Personalized plates lol.
The extra fee isn’t much.
