Driving 5 hours in Indiana this past weekend (2 1/2 hours each way) to watch my DD21 graduate from college, gives lots of opportunities to see cows grazing in the fields. My whole life when cows were seen someone would announce it “COWS!” It was either my mom, my dad, my DH or myself. It’s just something we do. My in-laws do it too when we are driving together somewhere. This past weekend I drove alone, because my DH was in Indianapolis for the day on Friday, so we met each other at the hotel that night. As I was driving alone, I found myself announcing to no one “COWS”. I just couldn’t not say it - LOL! Now I’m wondering if we are the only silly ones that feels that seeing cows requires a big announcement. Give us your mooing answer today…..

When driving and you see a cow or cows, does it get announced?
If yes…..currently or in the past?
If yes…..who announces it?
(multiple choice)

For Me……As I mentioned above, it is announced in our car. Currently, both my DH or I do, and it’s whoever is driving. Why is that? Because the passenger is either looking at their phone or something else. I love doing word & number puzzles when I’m the passenger, so I’m not paying attention to anything outside. My DH is faster and louder about the announcement - he says it for the car next to us to hear too :rotfl:

Cows 🐄 Horses 🐎 we announce all animals but especially cows granted I don’t do very many long car ride but if I’m in the car and I see a cow I’m like cows 🐄 I don’t know why we do this you’re stating the obvious but we still do it 🤣🤣 living in the Midwest we see a lot of cows 🐄

I mean, I guess soemtimes they were pointed out, but I can't really recall it being a "thing."

When I was really little I loved trains, and I did have this dumb song I made up that I would sing whenever I saw one or we got stopped at the crossing. I am sure my mom and sister loved it. 😁

Never knew that was a thing, why just cows vs other types of animals? I guess if you are traveling with small children, asking them to look for certain animals might give them something to do to pass the time. Not sure what other purpose this serves.

We live rurally and cows are all over town so no to that, but I do point out deer, and my daughter loves horses so we do point them out too.

Funny... I thought I was the only one who did that (and have trained DH, lol)! Cows, goats and sheep... I'll call out any field full of them. I'll often call out chickens, too. I don't know how/why/when I started it, though it was probably as an adult. It wasn't/isn't a family thing.

I do have a couple small farms near us with just a few cows... I actually say "hi cows" to them when I go past. :rolleyes1

I'm a Midwest girl too Slo. I would say nowadays Cows are announced sometimes but not always. We talked about them plenty in my childhhood. Forever I believed a brown cow gave chocolate milk. I always pointed them out to my kids. On the rare occasions I have my grandson with on a road trip I would definetly say something just to get his attention away from the phone/switch.

Cows aren’t unusual around here. At the right time of day traffic might stop for a herd of cows crossing the road. It’s more common to call out deer or other wild animals.

What a wonderful memory from my childhood. For us, it was more specifically “Cows In Field!” I think it began from a travel bingo game.

Today, we are much less likely to yell it but I have a strong feeling I will tonight!

Around where I live that would be most of our conversation then!! :teeth:
Yep. Where I grew up and in the rural areas just outside my current urban home, it would make as much sense to “announce” grass or trees. :confused3 A moose or bear would be novel enough to get a mention but even deer and coyotes go unremarked.

We have a lot of cows here, in fact we live just a mile down the road from a CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation). When we are driving outside our area I do tend to announce there are cows in view, and I do it by saying “moo”. 😁

I never knew this was a thing.

The only thing kind of close to this that we might do is say "wilder-cows" if we're driving through more remote parts of the US and are looking for wildlife. For example, I remember being in South Dakota once, seeing something that looked like it could have been a herd of bison when viewed from a distance, but it just turned out to be cows. Those then are audibly declared as wilder-cows as they are cows appearing in the wilderness in a spot that easily could have been wildlife. In the case of the areas around the east side of Glacier NP, those wilder-cows sometimes like to block the streets.
