I’m waking up to -10 degrees outside and it negative temperatures all day yesterday. If you are someone that lives in very cold temps like me (lots of cold temps in places recently), I hope you are staying warm and safe.

Today is Martian Luther King Day (became a holiday in 1983) and many of us have off work and school. I’m not sure if me saying this will be upsetting, but I think there should be school today and have the focus be on MLK to learn about him and his message. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say most kids are excited about sleeping in, watching TV, gaming and etc. But if they were in school, they’d be educated about him, and to me, that honors MLK more than having the day off. Yes, parents should be educating their children, but I’m going to bet that many aren't going to educate them like what they would receive at school. So today I’m wondering….

Do you have off work today?
For our retired DISers… did you have off work today?
For our students….do you have off school today?
For our past students (most of us)….did you have off school today?
(multiple choice)

*For DISers in another country, please post a holiday that you have off work or school that others may not.

For Me…… I’ve never been off on MLK Day - I worked retail for 25 years and now manage a Chiropractor’s office (we are always busy on MLK Day with those who are off work). In regards to school, I don’t remember if I was off school - I graduated HS in 1989 and college in 1993. I voted I went to school, because even though I don’t remember, I’m guessing that I did

My DH is working today and I think he’s always worked today.

I am off from work but we just started getting MLK day off. I’ve been with my company for 25 years, we started getting the day off 2 years ago. My husband has always had the day off, his company follows the stock market schedule.

We are in the UK so no celebration of MLK here and as we are retired we have every day off!
But, this seems a great opportunity to state that we hold MLK in the highest regard and view him as one of the greatest of Americans of the twentieth century if not of all time.
Standing on the Lincoln Memorial and remembering the "I have a dream" speech is an awe inspiring experience that can never be forgotten.

I am off work today. >25 years with the same company, they only included it as a holiday last year. Until then I had always worked on MLK Day.

That sounds like me we only stated getting it off a few years ago.

No holiday was ever a day off for me when I was working. Now that I am retired, all holidays are days off.
My wife went back to work, temporary, part time and part time workers don't get holidays so she is working.

Our company is closed today, as are schools.

And, I disagree that schools should be in session today. Lessons about MLK don't take place take just today. My kids learn/have learned about him at all times of the year. We don't just talk about him on 1/15. 🤷‍♀️

Today is a day to honor him, just like we are off for Memorial Day/Labor Day/Veterans Day/Presidents Day. There are a lot of local events that happen here to honor MLK, so having the day off to reflect also gives you the chance to attend those.

It (and other days like it) are not just a day off to sleep in.

I completely agree with you.

We are open, don't close for this holiday. Construction needs to keep on rolling.

Per state law, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is closed on all Mondays so I have the day off anyway.

(in-state joke since we have so many Monday holidays)

I am off today as I am a government employee at a state University. my classes resume tomorrow for the Spring 2024 semester.

I'm a teacher and we are off. My kids attend a different district and they are also off. I think that all schools in the state of Maine are closed today. Banks are also closed. In a previous life, I worked retail and we'd be open (would only close for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter)

I am not working today but it is because Monday is my day off. It is not a holiday for my company. I don't think I've ever worked for a company that gave this day as a holiday.

DH is off work. DD is off school but has work later.

I have had many different jobs during my work history and there was only one company that gave MLK day off. That was at an office located in downtown Chicago. The boss eventually made MLK a floating holiday and those who chose to work on that day could take a different day off later in the quarter. I used to work MLK day because I was in finance and it was a very busy time of year for me.

I am off today almost every job I’ve had I get this day off but I’ve worked corporate America most of my life I didn’t get this day off when I was in school because I graduated before it became a holiday

Just south of you in Massachusetts, and we're all closed today.

Retired now, but never worked in a place that observed the MLK holiday.
