For Me…..We remember my stepdad, who was in the Korean War, but he didn’t dIe during active duty. I know this holiday is technically not for him, but we remember him anyway - we made our own rules for the holiday - LOL!

I also remember family and friends no longer with us - but don’t we all do that on a lot of days ? I know I do !

Remembering on Memorial Day, a grade school classmate, First Lieutenant Patrick Scully. Patrick was killed in Vietnam shortly after the Tet Offensive in 1968. God speed, Pat, and thank you for your life and service.

I think of one of my classmates from elementary school. His older brother was among the first American's killed in Vietnam in 1965 or 1966. My classmate brought in a photo of his brother for "Show and Tell" when they learned he had been killed.

With all my heart, I give extra thanks to all who have served or currently are serving our country along with their families!

I remember my Dad who served in World War II and Korea and retired from the Army as a full Colonel after 31 years. Although he did not die in war, he knew many who did.

My mom and dad, two aunts and two uncles are all buried at Florida National Cemetery, fairly close together. My uncles were in WW II and dad during Korea. We think of it as a mini family reunion. My grandfathers were both in WW I, but are buried elsewhere. I am not aware of anyone in my family who died in combat (at least in the 20th century) but one of my uncles also served in Vietnam and his death was a direct result of the chemicals used in warfare there. It just took a few decades to kill him.
