Weekends in May = Proms for high schools. (Some may be in April, but not many). I look forward to this time of year so I can see pictures of my friends kids on Facebook. It’s always amazing to me how different the dresses are today, compared to when I was in high school, but that’s a topic for another thread. What I want to discuss today is our prom(s). So let’s go back in time today……

Did you go to any high school proms?
If yes…..how many?
If yes…..when?
(multiple choice)

For Me…….I went to one high school prom, and it was my senior year in 1989. My date was my DH, and if I had a convenient picture, I’d take a picture of it and post it. My dress was beautiful and expensive for that time - my grandma paid $300 for it. My DH’s tux was a light grey - we looked so good. Hard to believe that was 36 years ago.

I went to the Prom my Senior Year. I had just broken up with my boyfriend so I went with a guy friend. I spent much of the time in the bathroom talking with the date my (ex) boyfriend had brought. Those days of HS "drama" I don't miss. :teeth:

I went to two of them, 1989 and 1990. Jr and Sr years.

The first one was great, I was so thrilled. Second one was meh at best. What a difference a year makes with the same person :rotfl2:

I went to one high school prom. My date was with DH..but we went with a group of friends.
I wore a gown I had recently worn to my cousin's wedding (I was a bride's maid).
1972

Didn’t go to any - couldn’t afford it it wasn’t that I couldn’t afford the dress I couldn’t afford to pay the dues for jr & senior dues and buy the ticket so I didn’t go no one in my friend circle went either for the same reasons

My HS senior prom was in early June of 1979. I went with a guy from our friend group, not really a date.

And P.S. Is it “the prom” or just “prom”?

I went to the prom.
I went to prom.

And there were no silly things like promposals back in the Stone Age.

And there were no silly things like promposals back in the Stone Age.

Our eldest son did this, I still cringe for him!

I went to both my Jr. & Sr. year proms. Lets see, that would be 1990 & 1991. Second one was with my now-husband.

I went in 1986.

I was so looking forward to it. It was at a fancy hotel downtown. The dinner lasted so long, there wasn’t much time for dancing. I felt like we were at someone’s wedding reception. We ended up leaving early.

Didn't go to either. By my junior year I was fed up with school and it's 'trappings'. I went to the Catholic HS, all my buddies from the neighborhood went to the public HS. I was much closer with my buddies from the neighborhood and not involved with my school stuff. So no proms for me. And back then, late 50's, early 60's, I don't recall proms being all that big a thing, at least by us.

I went to several high school proms in the late 80s and early 90s, including my own junior and senior proms. As for the dresses...

1. My mom made me use my old Bat Mitzvah dress for any proms I attended before my own. It was a peach taffeta bridesmaids dress from 1986. It had a knee length mushroom style bubble skirt, a sweetheart neckline, and these huge poofy straps that were worn down over the shoulders. I think it was $250 before alterations, so we at least got several uses out of it.

2. I LOVED my junior prom dress. At this point, it was spring 1990 and heavily sequined stuff was all the rage. It was one of those Alyce Designs dresses. It was royal purple and lavender, strapless, had a bunch of floral beaded appliques including dangling strung beads from the centers of the flowers, a purple taffeta or satin cocktail length skirt, and this big two tone pouf at the hip. The sequins were so plentiful and sharp on this one that my dress actually cut me. I believe it was $485.

3. I only LIKED my senior prom dress. It was another one from Alyce (now 1991), still tons of sequins, a halter top with metal mounted chains of rhinestones, leafy beaded and sequin appliques, a big bow on the butt, and ruffle tiers where it was almost ankle length in the back but cocktail length in the front. I think I even more long black gloves with it. This was around $550.

And while I am not sharing pics of me in them, these are the dresses (well, the last two...I can't find any of the peach one that I'd be willing to share)...

No proms, I was probably working(which was preferable to me)

In Canada, until very recently, this milestone had always been known as “Grad” and is for Grade 12 students to celebrate completing their high school years. I went to my own with a date and to another as the date of a graduate (I was in Grade 11 at the time). It was the late 80’s - big hair, poofy ballgowns and heavy metal music at the dance.

Our school had Junior / Senior Prom - one dance, both classes. The juniors hosted the Prom for the seniors, but both classes went to the dance.

I had a long time girlfriend most of the way through HS, so we went both years together. I span decades - as Junior year was '89 and my senior year was '90. Damn, I'm getting old. :o

I went to my high school prom but I was not allowed to bring my girlfriend at the time so two of our mutual guy friends offered to go with each of us and then we met up at the actual prom. I remember it being....fine but afterwards the four of us went to Denny's in our prom attire at like, 1 am and I remember other people in the restaurant looking at us like we were crazy LOL

I need to rescind my vote.
I did go to one prom in the 80’s
It was my friends prom and a guy neighbor who was same class asked me to go. He loved down the street from her.
Well he got mad at my friend and decided last minute he was not going to go. Not a big loss because I was not into him.
So my friends date was great and took us both lol.
And I knew some people there so it wasn’t a loss.
And the only dance I went to in my high school was 9 th grade dance and it sucked because of drama of 2 of my friends and guys.
So our prom rolls around and I’m like nope plus the guy I was dating was not allowed by age older to attend.
But guess what? There was drama and I still heard about it lol.

I went to two, mine and my dates. My date was the cousin of a girlfriend. I made my dress for each dance. It was in the 1960’s, I graduated high school in 1964.

My senior prom was at the Disneyland Hotel. And, the fire dept was called! We have a great picture of my gang of friends & I out front…with the fire engine and firefighters. Good times!
