Poinsettias are so pretty this time of year. We see them everywhere - businesses, churches, stores and many homes. They come in different colors, but our local florist says that the red ones last the longest. I’m not sure if that’s correct, because my mom only bought red, I’ve never bought any, because mine are fake, so I’ve never experimented with different colors to know. Let’s take a few minutes to learn about poinsettias today….

Let me tell you…..I learned a lot from the above info. I didn’t know any of this - very interesting. I hope you learned something too. So, now let’s talk about this beautiful Christmas plant (I also learned while researching this topic, that poinsettias are considered plants and not flowers). So tell us today……

Do you have any poinsettias at your home?
If yes…..are they real or fake?
Also……what color are they?
(multiple choice)

*If you have both real and fake poinsettias, please vote for both - thanks

For Me…..Yes, I have a lot of FAKE red poinsettias in my home. They are everywhere, because I love them. I have them in pots, I have them in centerpieces, I have them in swags above doors - they are literally everywhere. I never buy real, because they never stay nice for me. The fake ones are perfect all season long and I never have to buy new ones, even though a few of mine are starting to show their age and may need to be replaced in a few years.

I need to find me some fake ones because I have none and we would like to have some because they are very pretty and no I did not know that history thank you for educating us!!! When Hobby lobby puts all their Christmas on 70% off I’m gonna be looking for these!!! if they don’t have any I’m gonna grab some next year when they put Christmas out in May 🤣🤣🤣

Have had various poinsettias in the past, but just never had luck with them. They are VERY sensitive tropical plants likely grown in perfect greenhouse conditions and never last more than a few weeks once you bring them home.

I like them, especially the red, but never buy them as they are poisonous to cats.

I was given a very cute little poinsettia this year that had been a centerpiece at a party we attended, but I passed it on to a friend who could use it instead.

We have a red poinsettia arrangement gifted to us when middle DS and DIL were in town last weekend. Her parents had given it to us. :santa:

No poinsettias here, real or fake. I don't really care for them actually, I mean they're okay to see a nice arrangement of them out and about, but I wouldn't want them in my house to see all the time. I like xmas cactus a lot better.

I just have fake sprigs......in various vases around the house.....red, pink and white

No live poinsettias since I’ve had a cat.

I have about 6 or 8 tiny poinsettia decorative clips that attach to Christmas tree branches.

Decades ago I bought a live poinsettia but left it in the car for a few hours and it was all drooped over when I finally remembered it.

I saw some beautiful red ones at the grocery store this morning, but I remember how much work it was for my mom to take care of them after the holidays, so I just admire them from afar. Although I like all the colors, the deep red are a particular favorite.

I had pink ones last year but had them locked in the bedroom because my daughter brought her kitty home. Bought them because never saw this colour before and my husband said get them.

We have had a cat for years so never had them but had fake ones. I do look at those big beautiful pots they have at Costco and say one day…lol

I just bought a live red poinsettia yesterday. I hadn't planned to buy one this year, but I found a beautiful one at CVS that was low priced.

I was able to keep a poinsettia alive until the spring one year. I planted it in the garden, and it grew like crazy in the summer. Then I dug it up before frost and kept it alive until the next year. You have to keep the plant in the dark when it turns dark outside if you want it to have the leaves turn red for Christmas. It was a lot of work, and I haven't tried it again. They usually die after Christmas.

Yes! To me, they are an indispensable part of Christmas decor. I have live ones, which I buy mid-December (just got 3 beautiful ones last week) and fake ones I use to decorate the tree and the garlands around the house. They are all red now to go with my current colour scheme. I never worry about keeping the live ones going after Christmas. I don’t have much of a green thumb; they get thrown out when the decorations come down after New Years.

I do not and normally never do; however, about 2 years ago, DD17s travel ball team sold them as part of a fundraiser. I don't know where they sourced these plants but they are literally some of the prettiest I've ever seen. They were also ridiculously hearty. I do not have a green thumb by any means but by about May, we just decided to get rid of them because I felt silly still maintaining these plants. They also didn't look as pretty by that point and become kind of leggy. Still, they were beautiful to have around in December.

Obviously, not current year but sharing because I think they’re pretty. 😊

I like them, but having pets in the house I don't want to risk it. I heard they are "mildly" toxic, but I don't want to even take that chance.

I’ve never proven this myself, but I’ve been told by “plant people” that the pink ones (and various novelty types) which are hybrids, are much more hearty than the naturally-occurring red ones. It would be interesting to hear if this is accurate, from anybody who has both types in their home, under the same conditions.
