A friend of mine has a middle school daughter doing a school project on uninterrupted sleep. She went on her mother’s facebook page and asked everyone how many hours of sleep they get, and how many hours of that is uninterrupted sleep - the results were interesting. The majority of people were saying they get 6 hours of sleep and about 4-5 of that was uninterrupted sleep. This got me thinking about all of you. I’m interested to know how many hours of uninterrupted sleep you all get. Before we get started, let’s learn about the importance of uninterrupted sleep…

Uninterrupted sleep really is very important, but sadly, many of us don’t get enough. So, let’s take a good look at our sleep, and give us your sleepy good answer today…..

On average….how many hours of uninterrupted sleep do you get each night?

*I realize every night is different - I’m just looking for an average.

For Me……I usually fall asleep around 10pm and wake up around 2:30-3:30am, so my answer is 5 hours. Sometimes I get up to use the bathroom and other times I just roll over and fall back asleep. I then sleep off and on until I get out of bed at 5:00am. Almost never do I go to bed and sleep until my alarm clock goes off. I used to wear my Apple Watch to bed to track my sleep, but I felt myself obsessing over it, which was making me sleep worse, so I stopped wearing it.

I said 4 hours but it's probably closer to 3. I'm a real light sleeper so the slightest sound or movement will wake me up. So Hubby snoring, I'm awake. Our little Yorkie sleeps in the bed with us (don't judge) and she tends to be up and down all night long. Hubby doesn't even notice but she sleeps on my side of the bed so I hear her running up and down her ramp. She also snores so even when she is under the bed, I hear her. A dog barking in the neighborhood, I'm awake. The wind blowing. I'm awake. Some sort of sound machine would have the opposite effect on me, it would keep me awake. Light doesn't bother me since I'm 100% night blind I prefer some ambient light or I freak out. I usually go to bed around 10, read until 10:30 and put my book down and am asleep by 11. I tend to get up between 4 or 5 and wake up at least once during that time frame.

I usually fall asleep quickly. Sometimes I wake up after four hours, sometimes I will sleep at least six hours without waking up. I try to keep the same bedtime routine. I usually go to bed by 10pm, read a few minutes, then turn off the light. I sleep really soundly, which is nice.

I wish I could sleep longer, but it only happens once in a while.

I picked seven hours but I usually get between six and eight. I almost always wake up exactly two hours after I go to sleep for a bathroom trip. Then I go back to sleep and get my uninterrupted sleep, so approximately nine hours total. It doesn’t seem to matter if I cut off liquids at noon or have a glass of water right before bed, my sleep is the same. I do use a white noise machine so I am not awakened by the neighbors or things like the garbage pickup.

I usually get around 5 hours, sometimes 4, before I wake up. Often I'll just wake up and go back to sleep again for a few hours, but other times I'll struggle and end up dozing on and off until I need to get up.

I sleep well and can fall asleep easily, but normally I fall asleep on the couch for several hours before waking up enough to actually go to bed. Many times I'll stay up an hour or so transitioning from couch to bed.

Takes me forever to fall asleep sometimes over an hour I usually go to bed somewhere between 1130 and midnight and I get up around between 430 and 5 AM sometimes I go to bed a little earlier not often sometimes I get lucky and fall asleep than 30 minutes once I’m asleep I’m usually out until the alarm goes off I may wake up 5 or 10 minutes before the alarm goes then I have the odd times or I’ll wake up two hours later and think it’s time to get up and actually do get up and get moving like it’s the start of the day and not realize it’s like 2 o’clock or maybe 3 o’clock in the morning and once I’m up I’m up
So me getting four hours to five hours of sleep is a massive improvement over previous years where I used to only get one or two hours of sleep so I’m steadily improving my sleep it’s a slow process
And no I don’t nap during the day most days sometimes on Sunday but not frequently
This has been a lifelong problem been this way since I was a little kid and it’s really funny I had One child just like me was sleep problems and one that could sleep at the drop of a hat anywhere any place anytime So envy that!!

I sleep quite soundly and can sleep practically anywhere but my internal clock is firmly set to 6 hours, no matter how tired I am or what time I go to bed. I try to keep those hours between midnight and six, but the recent fall time change has messed me up a little so that I’m both going to bed and getting up too early.

I sleep pretty well most nights but I do get up for a couple of bathroom visits. Overall I probably get about 8 hours of sleep.

4 hours...if I'm lucky. Sometimes it's more like 2-3. I just am not sleeping as well in this phase of life, but I'm usually content if I can at least fall back to sleep for a bit. It's a nightmare when I wake at 3 am and still sitting there wide awake when the alarm goes off around 5:45.

Interesting related tidbit:

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220107-the-lost-medieval-habit-of-biphasic-sleep

For centuries, humans commonly had a two-part sleep schedule, known as
segmented sleep or biphasic sleep. This pattern involved a first sleep after sunset, a waking period for an hour or two, followed by a second sleep until morning. The Industrial Revolution and the invention of artificial light, which allowed people to stay up later, led to this pattern fading and the modern monophasic sleep cycle becoming the norm.

My family has good sleep genes lol. Hunker down and that’s it. We are comatose until the next morning. I hardly ever sleep less than 7 hours a night and barely ever is that interrupted. DH on the other hand is happy when he gets more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. We both match our siblings too.

On average, probably about 6 hours, depending on whether or not our dog decided he needs to go out in the middle of the night.

I use my watch and on average I get about 6-7 hours of “sleep”. Of that, about 4-1/2 hours are restful and the rest are restless.

My blood pressure and diabetes medications make trips to the bathroom every 2 hours a reality 24 hours a day. Once in a while I might sleep 4 to 5 hours if I am really exhausted, but that really tests the limits of my bladder capacity. And so far I have been fortunate not to have issued with UTIs, which are a risk with my diabetes medicine forcing so much sugar out.
