Ash Wednesday is today.

Are you going to church today?
Do you receive ashes? (Not all religions do this)
Are you giving something up or doing something for Lent? (Not all religions do this)
Do you not eat meat today or on Fridays? (Not all religions do this)
(multiple choice)

For Me…..I am Lectoring/reading at Mass tonight, where I will be receiving ashes.
*I am giving up music in the car - I will listen to The Catholic Channel (XM 129) or have silence. I also, for the first time, am going to confession once a week - I was raised Lutheran, so confession is something I’m not used to doing, but after 28 years of being Catholic I decided it’s time to start going.
*I will not be eating meat today or on Fridays during Lent.

The faith tradition we worship in now does not follow the liturgical calendar and we don’t formally observe Lent. For me though, Ash Wednesday will always be a day of solemnity and joy - a reflection on our true nature, embracing humility and bowing our hearts in awe and gratitude for the grace we have received.

Between work and an evening vet appointment, I will not make it to church today. I will abstain from meat today and on Fridays during Lent. I am not giving anything up or doing anything extra, or at least I haven't figured out yet what I would do either way.

I was raised Catholic and used to do all of the things. However, I don't as an adult. (I have some very bad memories regarding fasting/no-meat days as a child. Doing it now does not put me in the right frame of mind.)

I will go to church tonight. I sing in the choir. I will receive ashes. I haven’t given anything up in a number of years. It always used to center around food and I’m trying to have a healthier relationship with food.

Other as though I am a religious believer in God and spiritual, I am not any part of organized religion. Only went to church to pacify the wife and later to make mom happy taking her as I was living there a couple of years.

So many memories of that and more with 12 years of Catholic school in the 50's.

No ashes or church today. I'll do no meat Fridays out of tradition, probably fish. Not giving up anything. Hmm, maybe I'll stop coming here for 40 days. :scratchin

*I am giving up music in the car - I will listen to The Catholic Channel (XM 129) or have silence.
Wow, you're dedicated! I could not do silence in car. (I quite honestly would be a less safe driver. Music helps me concentrate.)

I don't receive ashes or give up anything up for Lent, but sometimes we do the "no meat on Fridays" thing, as DH was raised Catholic. It got to the point that we felt a little guilty about that, though - seafood and pizza are treats here, not sacrifices. So I'll see what he wants to do.
