My pup got skunked tonight :sad2:

We were all outside, prepping for a family camp out in the backyard. DD & I had the flashlight and were looking for sticks for our fire in the ol' outdoor fireplace. DPup was nosing around nearby, and then I heard "pop", followed immediately by psssttttt. Well, it smelled really bad really fast! :scared1: Poor pup starting rolling on the ground, rubbing his eyes on the ground. DH got pup into the pool, I ran inside to get stuff to wash him. We washed him with a mixture of baking soda, peroxide & dish soap. Then dog shampoo. Then applied the odor remover than has sit on him until it dries, which will be overnight. He'll get another bath tomorrow to wash that stuff out. Poor puppy  He still smells. Not as bad as before, but still icky.

I can't believe the skunk was out there and not scared off by all noise we were making.

Needless to say, the family camp out was re-located to the living room due to extreme skunk smell in the back yard :headache:

Pooor baby!!!!! That is so nasty. We're pros here with it now as our darlin' Duncan got it 6 times (yes, seriously....six times) in one summer. This year, DS's dog got it once but fortunately not too badly.

Just an FYI on the Magic Mix (peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn). As much as you want to immediately hose the dog down or get him/her wet, don't do it! Rub that mixture all over and in really well down the hair shafts where ever you can being super careful with the eyes and nose areas. It will really really hurt them. Let the stuff set on the dog for about 10 minutes and THEN you can use water on the dog. If you put water on first what you're actually doing is just spreading that skunk oil around even more and making more of the dog stinky. The Dawn will lift the oil off but it needs to not be cut with too much water.

Hope PePe starts smelling sweet soon again!

Ooooh. Luckily that has not happened to our two yet.

I know they would go right over and want to play.

My dog was sprayed about 3 weeks ago for the first time. Wow what a smell. It has gotten better but sometimes I can still smell it on him. For about two days after he was sprayed that was all I could smell and I was worried I smelled too. I learned my lesson and will do the Magic Mix next time right away, I just panicked and started to whip his face with a wet cloth and put him in the tub to rinse him off. I ended up buying a can of Petrotech odor eliminator Clean + Green De-Skunk coat cleaner. It works great I really recommend it.

Good luck and I hope your pooch is smelling sweeter soon. :flower3:

Snort. I need to use Magic Mix on my dog as we had a thunderstorm and my border collie is terrified of thunderstorms. When the BC is terrified, she emits this stench, this really foul stench.

She knows what the brown bottles mean now, poor thing, LOL!

When freddy does that, from being scared, the vet says, "He expressed himself". the reasons for it... might be best to not discuss here.

But the vet has this spray that is amazing. I often wondered if I can get a can.

PetCo's grooming salon as a de-skunk treatment, I think. Although most of the time I see skunks in the yard near the dog it is at night when PetCo is closed!! Glad you knew what to do and the pup is okay!

Poor puppy.
My dog hasn't been skunked yet, but I think we have a skunk that lives close by because about once or twice a week we can smell it in the morning. Sometimes it's so strong you can smell it inside. One morning last year as I was leaving for work, I opened the back door and guess who was sniffing around? :scared1: I ran back inside until he left.

Sparky got hit last night. DH was walking him and managed to pull him away from the skunk before he got hit in the face so it was more of a glancing blow, but we still had to mix up the peroxide and baking soda before we went to bed. This is the second time the dog has been sprayed, I really wish he'd learn his lesson and stay away from them!

I was worried I smelled too.

OMG! This is my problem too! I couldn't sleep last night from the smell - it was inside and outside! I have had my husband smell my hair like 5 times today (even though I washed and conditioned it) :lmao:

lol I had the girls at work smell my hair, everyone here had the "skunk" smell in their nose too. :lmao:
