Skagway car rental or take the train

Trying to decide what to do. I like the idea of driving a car to carcross and back at our own pace. But a little worried of breaking down and missing the boat.
Has anyone rented a car?

We rented a car. It was fantastic! We made it all the way to Whitehorse, Yukon and back. We got to the car rental place before 8 and were third in line. We got our car quickly and beat all the tour busses - which was the very best part of renting the car. It was so nice to see the different stops without a huge busload of people. Whitehorse has a great little microbrewery that we visited and the scenery for the entire drive was incredible.

We had a private tour. It was a lot of fun. There are a few people that do those in Skagway.

I cannot recommend a private tour enough. This was by far the highlight of our entire cruise, and quite possibly the best day in my whole life. It was quite magical. We used Skagway Private Tours and Sherry was amazing.

I was considering renting a car, but neither DH or I wants to drive it because we're worried we won't get to sit back and enjoy the scenery if we're driving. We opted to book a tour instead.
