Size of Sofa Bed in Rm. 8602?

Thanks to this message board, I've been able to determine that Cat. 3 Rm. 8602 has only two beds: one in the bedroom, which I assume is a queen bed, and a sofa bed in the living area. I've also learned that a rollaway isn't available, so DD(12) and DS(11) will have no choice but to sleep together on the sofa bed.

Can anyone confirm whether the sofa bed in that room is a double bed, or a queen bed?

According to the brochure, there is a double sofa bed in a Cat 3 stateroom. For those that sleep 5, there is an additional pull-down bed.

I know it is just one MORE thing to cart along, but thru the years the best hotel room investment I ever made was for an Aerobed. There were too many nights that a double hotel bed just wasn't big enough for two cranky kids!

Blow it up at night, take it down during the day, takes only a moment! You could just ask your room attendant for an extra blanket and pillow.

Fawn has a great idea! Take an air mattress. You probably would not have to let the air out in the morning, just stand it up in the closet or lean it against the wall somewhere.

Also--from the picture in the brochure, I wonder if the couch cushions and/or chair cushions could be placed on the floor for a bed. It's one more thing to pack, but a fitted twin bed sheet might hold them together for the kid who is the floor-sleeper.

When we went to OKW one son slept in the sofa bed and the other in his sleeping bag on the sofa cushions on the floor.

Can you call DCL and see if your cabin has the fifth bed?

8602 is a handicapped-accessible Cat. 3 and it definitely sleeps only four. The pull-out bed in the living area is a double bed. The cushions would not be very comfortable for an older child to sleep on, so if you definitely don't want the kids to sleep together then the air bed or a sleeping bag (both of which you would have to bring) are your only choices.

You have a HUGE verandah in that room, the largest on the ship, by the way. Enjoy!

Our twin aerobeds came in backpacks that are no bigger than a sleeping bag...and that included the little motor that blows it up. We've had them for about 8 years, and they have gone thru tons of trips and 6 kids!

It's a great investment...and I can imagine kids fighting over who gets to sleep on that huge verandah with it. You may have to bring two!

What about downsizing to a category that has a pull down bed in the ceiling and a sofa that makes another twin bed? Save some money and have two beds.

OR

Is the double bed in that room the kind that can be made into two twin beds like in other staterooms? If so, have the steward make that up as twin beds for the kids and you sleep in the sofa bed with DH.

My family had cabin 8546 last summer & there was WAY too much furniture stuffed into the sitting area for there to be any room for an air bed. There was a table + 4 chairs, 2 end tables + a coffee table + 2 more chairs and a sideboard, in addition to the built-in shelves for the TV and the wetbar. I can't imagine where you'd put an air bed with out moving all the furniture and there's nowhere to move it all to. Maybe the accessible cabins are different . . .

Since we made our reservation a year and a half ago JUST to get this size room, we definitely don't want to downsize to a room that has an extra bed. I specifically asked the question about the bed when I booked, and was told that there WAS an extra berth. Actually, now that the cruise is paid off, I would have liked to upgrade to a Cat. 2, but no such luck - those have been booked for a long time too apparently.

We have a nice air mattress, but not the one that blows up by itself. I like the idea though, so I think I may rush out to the store today - we leave in only 2 days!

HAVE A WONDERFUL TRIP AND LET US KNOW WHEN YOU GET BACK WHAT YOU DID ABOUT THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS. Would you please post it on this thread so we can find it easily?

I would suspect that a handicapped accessible room would have to have more floor space than other Catagory 3s so that wheelchairs or walkers could make it through safely. The would lead me to think that you could move furniture to provide some space for the air mattress kid.

There still may be the idea of separating the main bed into twin beds for the kids and you and DH sleeping on that sofa bed. The people who have used them say that they are comfortable.

We will be in the very same situation in 2 months:

Cabin #8102, 4 of us with DS 12, DD 10. They'll destroy each other if they have to share a bed!

Please let us know how you worked it out when you get back... I need a good solution to this problem also!

8102 also has a huge verandah, but I don't think any of us want to sleep outside... sounds like maybe we'll be carting an air mattress across the country to resolve this!

8602 is a HUGE room, way bigger than the other Cat. 3s, and you definitely would have room for an air bed or sleeping bag. I have stayed in both a handicapped-accessible and non handicapped-accessible Cat. 3 so I am very familiar with the size differences.

BEANO--Can you let us know how you solve the problem and post it here so I can find it since I subscribed to the thread?

All day I have been thinking of what I would do if it was my dilemma and I keep coming back to splitting the big bed into two twin beds for the kids with both bedside tables between the beds so they are as far apart as possible. I would sleep in the sofa bed with my DH. I saw that done in a room that we walked past on our way to ours in 2000. Looked like a good idea so that is why I shared it already.

Aren't there other cat 3 cabins which have an extra pull down bed in the bedroom (so that the bedroom sleeps 3 and the living room has the fold out bed)? I thought I'd seen a picture of one. If so, perhaps when you check in you could ask to change, or even once on board check with people in the other cat 3 cabins and offer to switch if their's has a pull down bed and they don't need it. I'd sure switch to that great aft verandah room!

Either way, I bet your kids are going to have such a fab time on the cruise and be so busy that they'll just conk out at night - no matter what the sleeping arrangement are!

Just returned home on Saturday from our 7-day Eastern. Thanks to the original suggestion from FAWN, I did go out and purchase a twin-size Aero bed with a small motor attached, the night before we left. And boy, was I glad! Although we could have probably switched regular Cat. 3 room that would have had an extra bed, we felt very fortunate to have been assigned to the handicap accessible 8602 suite. The extra room was incredible, and we could have had a party for 25-30 people on our verandah . . . it was that big!

DS11 and DD12 would never have made it sleeping on the sofa bed together. The extra space the aero bed took in our suitcase was well worth it! The mattress fit in the corner between the sliding door and the desk in the living room at night. I brought my own sheets so I wouldn't have to worry about requesting them once we got there. The room steward folded the top sheet and blanket each day, and stored the mattress in the master closet (which was quite large) during the day. At night he would slide a few chairs around to make room, and then he'd make the bed up for us!

The aero bed was the best thing I packed, and allowed us to fully enjoy the larger space of the handicap room. Thanks to all for your suggestions, and happy cruising, BeanoC!

I'm so glad the aerobed worked out for you! I have two of them, and as I said, they are the best travel purchases I ever made. We used them in hotel room after hotel room...and the kids use them for sleepovers also.

Sounds like everything worked great. We're in 8600 in January!

how is the 'ride' in that room?...
has anyone stayed in the midship cat 3 rooms vs the aft cat 3 rooms (the access rooms)?.....
we really liked our midship cat 3, but i love the idea of a gigantic verandah (the verandah was my favorite part of the room)....
so i'm wondering about the ship motion back there, as well as noise, if any....
