my dd is 13 and eats like a bird and for myself i am not a big eater either.
with a sit down dinner (free dining) could my dd not order anything and just receive a small plate and pick off of my plate what she wants to eat? would they still charge me for a meal credit for her?

I believe that you won't have trouble if you choose to share a single meal with your daughter. Since you're paying for her as an adult (you had to buy at least a 1 day ticket at the adult price) you're welcome to share with her like you might share with another adult companion.

I don't think I'd present it to the waiter as she's going to pick, but rather that you're going to share a single dinner. But since they are hopefully going to split your meal, you might want to consider leaving a little extra tip.

If you ask Disney this, they'll say "no sharing on the Dining Plan" but as far as I could tell, (almost?) all the restaurants are waiving that rule. As Janet suggested, you should make up for the gratuity. I feel a good rule of thumb at Disney TS restaurants is $3.50 for each person not ordering anything.
