Just saw this on the local news tonight:

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/08/...esort-after-time-share-swallowed-by-sinkhole/

Seems that the owners of Summer Bay are sending out letters to guests affected saying that they won't cover anything lost, saying their homeowners' insurance should cover it.

I don't know about down south, but up here we generally don't have sinkhole coverage on our policies...

At least this report didn't call it a "Disney resort".

It's 6 miles west of DAK. I live across the street from it.

Things in Florida are all in/near Disney

The Keys....Disney

Panhandle...Disney

Jacksonville...Downtown Disney

Since I live in Florida I do have sinkhole insurance. But I would think any insurance would cover loss of property, right? They could always say it was stolen (name of thief Sink. Hole)

Your homeowners insurance should cover the loss of your personal belongings away from home. Your homeowners also covers items if they are stolen out of your car not your auto insurance policy. I would think they would cover losses at a resort as well.

Maybe so, but from the report, their local insurance denied the claim.

I'm not surprised by that.

I wouldn't expect to be compensated or reimbursed.

Just bad luck and thank heavens nobody was hurt.

But not everyone is a homeowner. I'm sure some of the guests fell into that category.

That's sad that the resort will not cover the cost. Wrong just wrong.

I don't think it's wrong at all, it's not the resort's fault a sink swallowed up half of the resort. If the loss occurred due to policy or practice of the resort then I'd agree they should compensate the guests, but the earth below the hotel, without warning literally opened up and swallowed the hotel.

...but presumably the resort has insurance for such an event.

We can't assume that their insurance did cover loss from a Sink hole. I'm sure if it did they'd have no problem covering the guests losses.

This. I live in Fl and I can not get sinkhole insurance. Insurance companies are not writing sinkhole policies in my county.

I think most insurance companies would classify this as an act of God, and generally they don't pay anything out for it unless there is extreme damage to property like a tree falls on to your house and makes it unlivable. In this case I'd say that's why you should always have trip insurance as you are more likely to get something back for your property then.

I also think this is wrong.....granted it's not the resort's fault that this happened, but I would think they would offer something to the people that rented there
