Silly question. How do you know if you have an infection in a piercing?

I put my earrings back in after not having them in for a few weeks last night. Tonight they're all red and crusty. I took my earrings out and rubbed them with salt water. Is there anyway I can make it go away without involving a doctor?

ETA: This is not a new piercing. It was first pierced in May 2002ish, and then again in Dec. 2007.

Is it possible you're allergic to the metal in them? Idk if that really makes sense though since I'm assuming you've been using the same type of metal since you got them pierced.

I got my ears pierced the first time in first grade and I was allergic to the metal and my right ear got so swollen the earring was practically embedded into the skin. I had to go to the dr where they got it out. I had to let it close up and repierce them about a year later.

I haven't had earrings in for over a year now and I still have problems with them being sore after I put earrings in.

I'd keep an eye on it and if it gets worse maybe think about going to the doctor. You could try using a bit of peroxide on it and see if that helps. I hope it gets better for you!
