Had one in March 2018. Flash of light followed by a “spray” of what looked like pepper in my eye. Had a vitrectomy with sclera buckle the next day with the gas bubble. My retinologist said that because of severe myopia, my eyeballs are not round but more oval shaped and and that “stretches” the retina. Combined with aging, it caused the tear. Think of it like stretching an elastic band till it snaps.
I had to lie face down for a specified period of time each day for 3 weeks. I guess that pushes the gas bubble against the back of the eyeball with “glues” the retina back in place. It wasn’t fun, but neither is being blind.
I know you can’t fly with the gas bubble. I don’t know about flying with the oil. I do know the oil has to be removed. The gas bubble will slowly dissipate over time as the fluid in your eyeball naturally replaces.
