I hope it's ok for me to cut and paste his post in this thread too...

(This is SSB's post from here on....)

Pilates, Maverick Ground Beef, and Beer

A great friend told me about this thread...

SSB over the last 15 years or so has tried many different things, and had varying success... by far the best has been the last year and a half, as I had to do something to compensate for lost exercise due to my back injury.... I thought that I would gain a good bit of weight is not, and surprisingly lost weight instead.

About 12 years ago, SSB was 245 at peak, and moved to 200 range and stayed there for many years, thinking not possible for less than that as I really only eat one meal a day, but was always a very big dinner.

After the back injury, I started working with a personal Pilates trainer here in Orlando, to try to strengthen my core muscles in support of my back. I saw her for about 10 weeks or so, and learned a slew of "core strengthening" exercises. I also did some work on the machines, but fairly limited.

I religiously do my battery of about an hour of pilates exercises coupled with 100-200 push ups (not at once.. haha) 3 times a week, sometimes four....and is has surely helped by back, posture, and I am sure the exercise very good as well.

As far as diet, I switched from eating a lot of carbs, to eating a pound or so of very lean protein on buns at night. My fave, that I probably eat 5 of 7 nights, is "Maverick Ground Round Beef", which is only 4% fat. It tastes great, is very very lean, and easy to cook. (Except when I burn them from chattin' on the phone while cooking... haha). I also drink beer (shocking, I know), which does not have fat, but carbs, but seen to do ok with.

Doing this, SSB had dropped from the 200 range to a life long goal of 175, one that I thought that I would never see in my lifetime, and then to 160, which is where I reside right now. If I ever drop below that, I am now able to allow myself to splurge a bit here and there, to maintain at that exact weight. I was shocked that it panned out as well as it did... and just gave blood and cholesterol is 186, so about the same as before. If I can maintain at this level, and now enjoy exercising even more, all the better.

For first time in over a year, I served a couple of hundred tennis balls last weekend, and hoping to be back out there again this weekend for a few hundred more. Wish me luck, as has been WAY too long, to be able to even "run". Wild how you take that for granted, and such a blessing when it is there.

Very best of luck to everyone, and Happy Easter!!

(Thanks for posting this here Karen, I was just getting ready to do the same. :) )

SSB,

Thank you so much for dropping by! :) It's so wonderful to read success stories and yours certainly is just that. Please come by often, we need all of the support and encouragement we can get.

WOW. I would never have guessed that SSB weighed 245. I never knew him when he did. I just thought he was one of those naturally skinny people.

I wonder if we could get him to join our support group?

Thanks for posting this :)

I'm sure he would join if we called it the beer club and we all talked about drinking beer! ;) ha ha!

As SSB would say, "Ha HA!" Well we could start a weekly beer check in thread ;)

SSB SSB SSB......

Is your one meal still at about 11 pm at night??

We need to see those six pack abs when we see you next ;) :)
Does it really work...I am thinking of signing up for some classes...MY middle needs the most work, and my tummy muscles are a mess :(

Wow, I never would have guessed SSB was anything other than the size I know him to be!

I hope the exercising is keeping that rotten back pain away!

Only a MAN could lose weight on the "hamburger and beer diet" :p :p :p

Good thing SSB and I are such good buddies, or I'd have to smack him..... ;)

:teeth:

LOL Ms. Sonja.... :) :) :) Well... SSB never really thought of it that way... however, some might have trouble eating the exact same thing every night ... haha! It really has been great for me, thus far.... the key is that super lean ground meat, and nothing else added but ketchup. :)

Yeppers, Ms. Glo... it has done a lot of great things for "core" ... muscles in SSB's back and stomach ... area much stronger than ever before...

I still don't try to do anthing much with weightlifting (as still think that it might have been part of problem initially) or sit ups or the like, but the Pilates excercises have nevertheless made all of the muscles much stronger and supportive of my back, than any of those harder impact type exercises.

A great new thing that I just started is the infamous treadmill. Never thought that I would like it, but knew that I had to work on my wind if ever playing tennis again in the future (I sure hope). Ran/walked fast a mile on Saturday, and then three miles yesterday... was really more enjoyable than I would have thought, and it "said" that I burned 300 calories, so was a good deal!

I shall be more than happy to be a part of the group, and a support, as I have surely been through some of the same things that some of you are experiencing.

Best of luck to all!!

That's great news, SSB. I'm so glad you will visit WISH. You will be a great help to us all :) {{{HUGS}}} my friend.
