I have read that some shutters are rated for about 50,000 shots...Is that it???

I routinely take over 5000 shots per vacation now on my S5IS, I am sure I would take more than that on an DSLR...Is my shutter really going to die on me after only 7 or 8 trips? I take 2-3 trips a year...so it would only be good enough for 2 to 3 years? How much does it cost to get the shutter replaced? Are they under warranty after replacement?

The more expensive the dSLR the more the actuations the shutter is rated for. Entry level dSLR's are usually no more than 30-50,000. Next level up (like the Nikon D80) is upwards of 75,000. The Canon 30D/40D is up around 100,000 iirc. The Nikon D300 is 150,000 (The Pentax K20D is probably over 100,000). The pro camera's (Canon Mark III, Nikon D3, etc.. are upwards of 300,000).

Now, these are not exact numbers. Some will last much longer, others could go earlier. The shutter mechanisium can be replaced. I've seen people write that their's replacement cost was around $250. But I personally haven't seen any quoted prices from the camera makers.

The S5 is a point & shoot. It does not have a mechanical shutter, so you don't have to worry about it ever wearing out.

I did not know that...

The Canon 40D sounds like it should last a bit but I will get the extended warranty just the same.

Very true, but P&S cameras still have a lifespan. Many other things can fail (shutter, lens motor, sensor, flash).

I had a Sony P&S which died around 10,000. Later (after MUCH research) learned that it was rated for about that. It's not exactly information they willingly give you.

But it's nothing to be concerned about. Now-a-days, you're MUCH more likely to upgrade before you see a failure.

FYI, my Rebel's well over 50,000 in 4 years and still going. I shot about 4200 on my last Disney vacation alone.
