If you get over two feet of snow, as some folks in the Northeast did this past weekend, you should rake or shovel the snow off of the roof.
But you must not mar the shingles or roofing with the shovel. That will greatly shorten the life of the roof.
To be safe, don't shove the shovel down closer than six inches from the roof surface. Leave a layer of snow behind.
The rough crushed stone on the shingle surface is to protect the material from the sun. Even small gouges will result in rapid deterioration come summer when the "sun beats down and burns the tar upon the roof ... *
