Should World Cups and Olympics only be held respectfully in one permanent location from now on to save money and resources?

First of all, no one is forcing a country to spend money on either Olympics or WC infrastructure (at least I hope not). The countries are CHOOSING to do so. Don't want to spend all that money/have all that left over infrastructure? Don't bid.

Now, want to at least cutdown on graft? Divide the world up into 4-6 areas (can use continents maybe?). Rotate the event between the continents. Each area gets to decide where the event is being held when it's their turn. TPTB at the Olympics or FIFA can set out what the minimum requirements are, but don't get to decide the location.

If an "area" is smart, they're going to pick locations where they either already have infrastructure, or can build infrastructure and use it into the future (like someone suggested upthread, turn the Olympic village into low cost housing, let colleges/universities utilize the sporting venues).

Spreading it out allows different areas to benefit from the tourism, and allows different fans to attend. A relatively small amount of Americans will travel to Qatar for the WC this year, but you'll probably see a lot of "casual" soccer fans when the WC comes here.

I imagine this is how the NCAA basketball Final Four along with the Super Bowl locations get chosen.

I should have fact-checked. Turns out not all the Olympics are abysmal money losers. Some do quite well. 1984 LA still leads the pack. YMMV...

I think you might have posted the wrong link.

Many of the recent olympics have made a profit. Seoul made more than Los Angeles just 4 years later so adjusted for inflation maybe more, maybe less.

I don't think they factor in venue reuse to the profit. They really should. Atlanta built the venues with reuse in mind or built them to be temporary. Many venues are still in active use and have been since 1996.

Qatar has done their part to kill as many as 15000 workers to get ready for the World Cup.
I chanced upon a documentary about the WC in Qatar recently.

A Qatari official claimed there were only 3 deaths and fewer than 50 injuries among the imported workers “while on the job.” He claimed any other deaths/injuries occurred while off duty. :sad2:

And since the overwhelming amount were “unofficial,” their families received no compensation.

They should be held in a single place to perhaps reduce the insane amount of graft and corruption associated with awarding the events.

Or perhaps individual events or games should be randomly assigned to countries. France you are hosting badminton this olympics. The US gets pole vaulting.

For the World Cup, each participating country hosts a single match.

There would be so much less opportunities to embezzle and bribe.

Yay Sports!
The environmental impact of hosting a World Cup all over the globe would be even worse than what we have now.

There is a movement to have the prize money go to the workers’ families.
