Should we move to Orlando?

DH just got the opportunity to transfer with his company to the Orlando area. We are all Disney fans (3 kids who are Disney-onsessed).

What do you think? Will moving "right next door" ruin the magic and make WDW seem "ho-hum"? I would hate for the kids to actually get bored with Disney!

All opinions welcome!

Just moved here the end of June and it's great!! Before school started we would get up and head over to whatever park wasn't EMH and stay for 3 hours or so and then head home. We are really close to the parks. I have gone to DTD and shopped and we've also been to the movies over there as well. I can't wait for the holidays to see how everything is decorated. It should help with the homesickness a little.

I would go!! I wish I could get DH to consider moving to Florida. If you all get "bored" with WDW, you could switch over to US/IOA LOL!!!! I cannot imagine WDW getting" old". Also, I hate cold weather. In Oklahoma it's too long of a winter for me.... I can't imagine being in Maine!!! Not my cup of tea. :earseek:

Yeah i've been living in Orlando for 12 years and I haven't gotten sick of Disney! I don't think I'll ever will! :)

Well, I don't think you will get bored with Disney. I still miss it pretty much every day. BUT, we found the schools there to be lacking and if you are trying to be near a good school the housing prices are pretty high. Also, you should check out how much you will pay for insurance for your house and cars. I don't want to sound like a total downer, but there is a lot to think about besides Disney... you will continue to love that anyway :).

I would love it if my DBF got a transfer opportunity. We have been looking to move and thats one of our rules. One of us has to have a job going into it.

I would jump on it in a second, but thats just me.

Thanks to everyone for their opinions...always helpful. Fortunately, we have lots of time to make this decision...they wouldn't want him to start until NEXT Sept., so I can spend sime time doing all the necessary research, etc. Schools will be my main issue, of course (since we know we can afford housing in the area). Now, I just have to tell DH that doing all this research will require several trips down to Florida...LOL

In response to your info on "how much you will pay for insurance for your house" may soon be changed to "can you or will you get insurance for your house" 7 major insurance companies are pulling out of FL as of today & how many more will follow suit. They are either not writing new policies or not renewing existing ones. I would like to also ditto what you have said about the schools too. I am here nearly 14 years (originally from Westchester County NY). When I moved here my oldest was in ~K~. I was warned that they werent' the best & they aren't. In the county I live in, even if you spend a fortune on your home, your child still may end up on a bus for 60+ minutes to be sent to a school in a less desiralbe location. It is called "School Choice", you place your preferences & the disctict picks for you (you must list all schools in order that you want) and you can end up with your last pick :sad2:

As far as getting board with parks, I personally haven't gotten board, but my children have. The older (18) he will not come with us anymore, the next she(17) will come maybe 3 times a year (when we stay for longer than a long weekend) & the younger (12), she has no choice but to come...she still enjoys it but has said that we shouldn't go as often as we do. She was born here in FL & has been going to the parks, well, since I was pregnant with her :rotfl: . I live just under 3 hours away from the parks so we still get to stay at the resorts. I think that is what my kids enjoy. They will go to one of the onsite resorts (Disney or Universal) and not even want to go to a park, but hang out at the hotel :confused3 me .... I love doing both :goodvibes

Look into building now before you go, so it will be ready when you get there. Housing is unbelievable compared to a a few short years ago! Now, I really regret not buying that $130,000 house in Clermont two years ago... :confused3

Move to Orlando---oh, and send me a message about when you're coming down--I'm a title agent and have about a million great agents that can show you around orlando and clermont.

My wife recently took a job in Orlando near downtown. I recently helped her move and have visited a couple of times. My observation to this point on living in Orlando and how you feel about Disney World - she lives 30-40 minutes away from the Disney Parks, it feels like if could be 300 - 400 miles away. Living and working in Orlando is completely different than visiting for a few days or a week. You know WDW is there but there is a certain effort to get to it. When you are driving through traffic and looking at non-touristy stuff you could be in any city USA. I think we will still enjoy our WDW visits, but I don't think we will try to make WDW a focal point of our Orlando stay.

I always tell my son - just remember there's an "ick" to everything.

I used to live in Clearwater and it was beautiful! BUT, I still had to work, still had bills, still had a house, yard, pool to take care of, etc. Consequently, didn't go the beach (about 10 min. away) as often as I would have liked.

There are a lot of things to think about - most importantly - the school system. I didn't have any kids at the time I was there, but remember my co-workers (the more affluent lawyers) all had their kids in private schools. Sounds like things haven't changed much. Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but just research a lot - like I'm sure you will - and make an informed decision using your head, not your emotions and love for WDW.

Good luck whatever you decide!!!
