Should we bank first

We are looking at making a reservation for BCV for the last week in October. I want to make it soon so that we get the early booking window, the question I have is should we bank this years points first.

The reason I ask this is that we have 450 points for this year left and our use year starts Sept 1st. If we would have to cancel the reservation because of monetary restraints the points would go back to their current use year and we would not be able to bank anymore. If I bank them then they would go back to the 2010 use year and I would have a year to use them.

Please le me know if this is correct thinking and the logical thing to do.

Thanks
Judy :thanks:

First, reservations for October 2010 have already started (the 11 month window opened in November 2009).

But, with a Sept UY, if you bank them into 2010 for that Oct trip and have to cancel, they will stay in your 2010 UY and be good from September 1st, 2010 through August 31st, 2011. Banking is a final transaction so once you do it, you can not "unbank".

If you don't bank them, then you won't be able to use them at all for the reservation and will have to use them up August 31st, 2010.

Good luck!

I know the window is open we are trying to beat the 7 month wondow, we own at BCV, and it fills up quickly at the 7 month window. If I understand your post then my idea to bank is the correct way to go.

The only reason not to bank your points for your Oct. reservation would be if you are still considering taking a DVC trip before Sep. 1. If you think you might be doing that, then make your reservation using 2010 points. Then you will have 2009 points still available for a vacation in your 2009 use year. In any event BE SURE to bank any 2009 points by April 30. At that time MS will swap banked 2009 BCV points for any 2010 BCV points you used for your Oct. reservation if you ask them to do so. (I have had MULTIPLE CMs at MS tell me recently that they will swap out points this way WITHOUT CANCELING THE RESERVATION as long as you are swapping home resort points for home resort points. And I was told this without even asking the question. MS seems to be very worried about the 2009 points I still have while using 2010 points for my reservations.)

When in doubt, bank first. We had to make some changes to our reservations and the DVC reservations staff were great about adjusting our points so we didn't lose out, but sometimes it does get confusing. The reservation folks will always try to do the best thing for you and your point situation.

When in doubt, bank first.

...Unless the OP might still be considering a trip before Sep. 1. If the OP banks all points now, then any trip before 2009 would involve borrowing 2010 points and those points would then HAVE to be used before Sep. 1, no banking allowed.

Since you have a September use year, you must bank the 2009 points if you want to use them for a trip in October 2010.

Your 2009 use year is for vacations between 9/1/2009 and 8/30/2010.
Your 2010 use year is for vacations between 9/1/2010 and 8/30/2011.
Your 2011 use year is for vacations between 9/1/2011 and 8/30/2012.
etc.

First, match your vacation dates with the use year. October 2010 is in your 2010 use year, so the points to pay for it must also be in that use year.

You can use the points you get in 2010, or the points you bank from 2009 into 2010 or you can borrow points from 2011 into 2010.

All of your points are already assigned to your account. They just have to be inn the correct use year for your vacation dates. When you call is not related to use year - you can call as early as 11 months prior to check in for your home resort and as early as 7 months prior for a non-home resort.
