We are 30 days out from our trip. My DD is in kindergarten and will only be missing 3 days of school for our family vacation. I was rereading the parent handbook and it states that they only need 5 days notice for family vacations. Should I wait until a week before we go or send DD in with a note on monday?

we set up a meeting yesterday and told his teacher. We arent going till October 16th. I wanted to give her plenty of notice so she can get a packet ready. Turns out she doesnt do that at all. She wants DS to keep a couple of logs and enjoy his vacation

I am a first grade teacher. If the handbook says you only need 5 days, than
that's all you need, but if your nervous about it, than go ahead & send the teacher a note now & a reminder just before you leave (althought missing just 3 days is hardly anything. Kids miss that amount all the time when they are sick). I would not ask for a meeting just for this, as the previous writer stated that she/he did. I can speak for many teachers, and we just don't have time for conferences on things such as family vacations. Our planning time is limited enough & family vacations does not rank up there as important.

If it is an accepted procedure at your school that vacation time is ultimately taken as opposed to given/granted, then feel free to give twice as much notice. This gives the school and the teachers added flexibility to schedule conferences at their discretion.

I gave our school 2 weeks notice. DD is in kindergarten & DS in 3rd grade. I wasn't worried about DD but DS I was. Have a great trip.

I told my sons teachers at the beginning of the school year. I wanted to make it clear that we would do whatever they wanted to make this as painless for them as possible.

I used to tell the teacher at the parent/teacher conference or at open house but this year, I've decided just to send in a note about a week before. My DDs are in Kindergarten and 4th grade.

I do not expect any packet or homework BEFORE the trip, so I see no reason to tell then too early.

I am starting to dread telling my 4th graders teacher. I have a feeling next year our trip will be a long weekend or in August. I just feel so guilty now that they are getting older.

I will miss MVMCP and MNSSHP though. :(

I am sending a note with DD tomorrow- we will be at WDW the first week of October. I feel two weeks' notice is sufficient. DD is in 2nd grade, and if she gets work ahead of time to complete, fine. If she doesn't get it until after our trip, that's fine, too. We plan to have DD keep a journal each day (to practice writing and spelling), and to handle her own Disney Dollars to buy souvies (to practice math skills).

This was NOT the only reason I called a meeting - it was secondary. There was other isssues that were most important for a meeting to be called.
