Should I cancel now?

I just made a reservation about a week ago for a 2 bd at OKW for April 27-May 1st. It was a last minute trip and when I made the ressie I was already in the penalty period so I could not buy the trip insurance (which I always buy). Anyway, two days ago my husband broke his tib and fib and has to have surgery on Monday. Our trip is only 3 weeks away. I do not know how he will be in 3 weeks. Would you cancel now or wait a week or so to see how he is doing after surgery. This trip was going to be a relaxing resort trip and we were not planning on doing any parks. He said I could go w/o him and take the kids but I would not leave him. I am not sure what I should do.

I'd maybe try to rent the reservation out as you will have the points go into holding and could lose them.

Depends on the Use Year and your plans between now and when the points expire.

They will go into holding and cannot be banked. So if you have a June UY and won't be able to re-book later in May, you probably want to either try and sell the reservation or do your best to go.

If you have a later use year and there's a chance of re-booking...well I guess you could still hold out until the last minute with this trip before canceling. Since the points will go into Holding either way, it really doesn't matter whether you cancel now or 24 hours ahead of time.

I would call MS tell them what happened, and see if you can get a HA room, and go. My DD broke her fib last spring and 3 weeks after surgery would have been fine to go, just rent a wheelchair and go relax. I bet he would rather sit by the pool and read in the sunshine then sit at home.

Sorry to hear about your Husbands misfortune, and I hope his surgery goes well. If it were me I would wait to see how he is doing after a couple weeks then make the decision. I have been there with DW and three children after having major ankle surgery, and all of the cm's and ms were very accomidating and helpful. Make sure you contact ms to make them aware of your husbands situation, and any special needs or accomidation he may need. Good Luck!!!

I have to agree with the others. I think he likely will be able to go, but will probably need access to a wheelchair (yes each resort has a few to be used by guests), and at check in, you might want to be sure they get you on a ground floor or close to an elevator. I doubt you need HA accommodations, but they'll gladly work with you on where would be easiest.

After surgery you will still have 3 weeks til your trip. I think he may be ok to go. If the kids are older and more self sufficient it would be easier for you than if they are young. This way your hubby can just relax and get well. What better place to recuperate than Disney:)

You won't suffer anymore penalties if you cancel in a week or so, than if you cancelled today. Holding is holding, as long as you cancel prior to the day you're suppossed to be there. I would think that maybe a relaxing vacation would be nice. He probably can't work, so take advantage of the time off. Spending time in the parks could be rough, but the weather will be beautiful to sit on the patio or by the pool. I imagine a bit warmer than NJ!

I agree with trying to go in 3 weeks with 1 caution. Consider how you will be getting there. Flying with a cast or brace can be difficult and uncomfortable. If you're driving that may make it easier.

Just something to think about since you will have to get there before you can relax and enjoy the Florida sunshine...

I would still go on the trip. You said you planned on not doing any parks anyway. In 3 weeks your DH should be well enough to go. He may still be recovering, but I know I would rather be recovering at the resort than at home. You can make it a relaxing enjoyable trip for your whole family.

I had a broken tib/fib. A lot depends on whether he is in a below the knee cast. He will obvisously be on crutches, as well. But, you can easily get a wheelchair at the resorts and in WDW parks. One note, if flying, be sure to tell Dr., as he is more prone to bloot clots b/c of the cast, I believe. It can be as simple as the Dr. telling him to take an aspirin the day of flying.
I would wait until 1 week after surgery and see how he feels---then either cancel--if you can reuse the points--or try to rent out your reservation, if you decide not to go. Good luck. Elaine

Well I spoke to DH's doctor today and he said NO GO. He has to have a rod put in his leg and screws and he said he does not want him in the airplane with the cabin pressure and does not want him to go. So I called MS and canceled. My use year is March so I will probably book a trip in Jan. We are already going in October of this year. Unfortunately, I always purchase the insurance but this time I booked within the penalty period so I could not purchase it this time.

well, at least you have almost 1 year to use the points! You could also get the word out to relative and friends---someone you know would probably LOVE to rent the points from you, if you needed.
Good luck with surgery--I thought the flying thing might be an issue---WDW will always be there--no sense risking it--best wishes. Elaine (ps--if it makes you feel any better---my tibia fracture happened before before my wedding--I got married in a cast and honeymoon cruise had to be canceled--we took our "replacement" honeymoon to Miami and the Keys later that year (4 days after Hurricane Andrew hit!!)--our luck has gotten better since then!

Hope all goes well for your DH and that his recovery is both easy and quick.

FWIW, I think January is one of the easier times to get a reservaiton if you have to use holding points.

I'm glad to see that you didn't wait. You got great feedback from the only person who really knows, and he told you the truth (for your DH) - don't go.

Points in holding are not the end of the world. You may be able to use them easily (we did), or you may lose them. So what? They're points.

The important thing is to get DH fixed, and rehabed the right way. And much of that depends on his underlying physical/medical condition. There is only one person who probably has a good grip on that, and that's his doctor.

Problem solved -- on to surgery and rehab. The points will take care of themselves.

Good luck, and your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully we can get a ressie in Jan but if we lose them, we lose them. Like another poster said they are just points. We go to WDW about 3 times a year so this is not a huge deal.

My husband got hurt saving our 4 year old DS life so I am counting my blessings and this is minor compared to what could have happened to our little boy. Thank you all for your prayers.

You could use your points for the October trip. Make another reservation at sixty days for October trip using holding account points, cancel original trip and bank those points.

Good luck!

Thank God he was able to save your Son. I'm sure everyone agrees that a few broken bones is worth the life of your child:goodvibes

As nicki's mom stated, you could try using these to later book your October trip, cancel the other October ressie and bank those points if you need to.

I was in a motorcycle acident 3 weeks before our trip. I rented from a outside company got one that came apart so it fit in our rental. This way you have it with you every place you go. I had a pin in my foot and a boot Like BOB from DIS Unplugged does. Went to all the parks and in the pool. If you dont feal that good theny rest by the pool or go to parks and people what when family are on rides. Hope all goes good and get well soon.

The only problem is I called day by day to get a 1 bedroom at BCV and BWV and I think if I cancel, I will not get a ressie for either place because of food and wine. But it is worth trying. I didn't think of that. I am using the same amount of points for my Oct trip as I was using for this trip.
