Should I buy SS if I want OKW?

I know the first rule is "buy where you want to stay". Where do I want to stay? OKW in a 2 bedroom villa! But... there's some really good reasons to buy SSR over OKW, like a longer contract and lower maintenance fees. We stay at different times during the year, but typically not in the summer. Any thoughts on if I'd have a lot of trouble booking a 2 bedroom at OKW at 7 months out? If they are scarce, I'd buy at OKW, but if 2 bedrooms are readily at OKW 7 months out, it seems like buying at SSR and booking OKW may work for us. Thoughts?

My thoughts are of you want OKW keep an eye out for an extended contact. However, if you haven't stayed at SSR you might want to try it. SSR is walking distance to DS and has remodel coming. You might find you would enjoy it as much as OKW if you try.

As for availability currently OKW seems to have 7 month available most times of the year, but when it is busy for DVC you may be looking at staying at your home because everything is gets booked quickly. Also booking trends are changing all the time. What might be wide open now could be come hard to get in just a few years.

Thanks for the input! Yes, SSR has some good points. I actually live just a few minutes from the actual Saratoga Springs in upstate NY, so the resort's theming really just isn't "special" to me. You're right, though. Booking may change as the years go by. I just hate the cost of the maintenance fees, especially the higher fees for OKW, as well as the shorter contract. There just seem to be so many more SSR contracts to choose from, so getting the amount of points that I want (175), seems a lot easier. Boy, this is tough!

If you want to routinely book the “near hospitality house category” at OKW, the home resort advantage might be needed. At 7 months, nights can be missing from the desired length of stay in that category.

My opinion is that getting a 2 bedroom OKW at 7 months (with SSR points) for non holiday travel will be relatively easy at 7 months

OKW has the least expensive Grand Villas (3 bedrooms). Those are seldom available at 7 months if you want more than a few consecutive nights.

That's a really good point that I hadn't considered. Thanks!

Right now I just need a 2 bedroom, but as the family grows, I'll probably need more space. Thanks!

And if you end up wanting a Grand Villa in the Hospitality House area, there are only 2 of them.

Purely on financial side of it, SSR is a better buy than OKW with the current resale pricing between the two.

I'd say no problem IF you went in the summer. If you want to be assured of it during the fall then buy OKW. If you're ok at SSR on the off chance you can't get OKW either right at 7 months or via waitlist then SSR will probably work.

Thanks for the the link! I wonder how the 1 bedroom compare to the 2 bedroom villas in availability. I understand Skier_Pete is working on 2 bedroom availability, which I look forward to seeing! I know I should just buy OKW, but the frugal side of me says "save some money and get a longer contract and buy SSR!".

I am on vacation so I don't have direct access to my files, but from memory the OKW 2-bedroom data seems very close to the 1-bedroom data. I would say that most of the year you can get a OKW 2-bedroom at 7 months, but those super popular times (first two weeks of December, first two weeks of November, mid-October) would be the big challenge.

Shoot me a PM on Sunday and I will send you a clip of the OKW 2-bedroom as an early preview!

That's great, thanks!

Skier Pete did such an awesome job with that.

Too bad he left of the Poly Bungalows...oh wait, that would have been just a giant green square!
For most of the year, but during fall frenzy, September to December it appears most days are booked.

I was kinda kidding, but do you know if its like that prior to 7 months out? (I would love to know how often the Bora Bora Bungalows are actually booked with PVB points)
Looked on line today, and saw that from tomorrow til the end of july every day but 1 was available.

BREAKAGE BONANZA for Disney!!!

Keeping in mind that we do not know the QUANTITY, I find the 60 day availability snapshot to be more telling re breakage. It seems the same categories consistently show up there.. It's rare to see anything except SSR (1B & 2B, usually 1B), OKW (1B & 2B, usually 1B). Poly Bungalows or something at Aulani.

Shhh...don't share this anywhere just yet. Here's the numbers for OKW 2-bedroom about 90% complete - areas in white are not yet filled in. Basically it says you should easily get a 2-bedroom at 7 months from mid January to early October. from Oct - Jan you would need to be flexible about the date and you might be able to put something together.
