I don't get this statement. Saw it in a new article on a website. Can't they just said "shot and died". Do you think it is the opposite of "shot alive"???

well you can be shot and live to tell the tale, 50 Cent has made himself quite a career out of it...

Well, I know you can get shot and live, but they don't say you are shot alive. Why say shot dead? It just baffles me!!!

Because it has more of a 'sting' when you say it. They want to make the story dramatic.

I've also heard "shot and killed", but there's an obvious difference between shot and shot dead, so I don't understand why it's such a poor phrase?

Hmmmm, I'm not getting it either. You are either shot, or shot dead.

What am I missing?

It's a phrase like "went missing."

The more you think about it, the less sense it makes.

Or like with airplanes--a near miss. Either you hit or you miss--what's this about a near miss? Maybe you could have a near hit.

I think "shot dead" is a perfectly appropriate phrase. It conveys an immediacy that "shot and died" does not IMO.

I just had a kid write in a paper that Ophelia "drowned herself and died". I told him he was being a little redundant. ;)

And how many of us have a "drying machine" next to our "washing machine"?

I guess that the opposite of "shot dead" is wounded.
