In January 2021, my husband and I decided to getaway for our anniversary in February. He couldn’t get off any extra days so it would be a super short trip with only 1 day in the park. Not ideal but I will take it. Even though this was a quick trip, I learned a valuable lesson
Background:
We are 38 and 40 and he’s older J We have 4 kids ages 21, 13, 12 and 12. We run around crazy trying to get kids to sports, school activities, work, etc. My husband’s work route was changing and our anniversary week would be the last week he has off Thursday and Friday. He tried to get off that Saturday too but it was denied.
I booked our SW flights using points and got a killer deal. It was only 10,000 points roundtrip for both of us! I booked us leaving Wednesday at 5:20 and coming back Friday at 2:25. Not quite 48 hours in Florida but I needed some sunshine and fresh air. About 10 days before our trip, I booked our hotel through Priceline. I did the ExpressDeal and knew it was Disney Swan. I really wanted that hotel since EPCOT was the only park we would be doing. We ended up paying $126/night plus the resort fee.
And then Snow-mageddon hit Texas. It had been cold the week before and we knew there would snow/ice but had no idea how bad it would be. Every winter the weather folks say a blizzard is coming and we will barely get a frosting. We were prepared to a degree but it never crossed my mind that all of the State of Texas would get snow. It blew my mind that South Texas by Mexico had snow.
We were really lucky and never lost power but unfortunately our Water Company’s generator is electric and they lost power. So we did not have any water but we could stay warm which is a blessing compared to others. We opened our house to our friends and family and for about 4 days we had 18 people coming and going.
The day before our trip, I told my DH that I wouldn’t leave unless we had water. I just couldn’t leave our kids without a way to bathe and flush toilets. Apparently the Gods heard me as we got water back at 6:30. We did some quick laundry so that I would have some undies to wear in Florida.
Now we just had to cross our fingers our plane would be able to take off…. My husband’s boss had asked him to come in on his days off to help get his groceries stores stocked. He works for a major food chain / snack food company and all the stores had bare shelves. He reminded him that we had a flight booked but would come in if it was cancelled. No joking his boss texted with cancellation updates on flights out of Dallas.
The flights before and after us were cancelled as they were connecting in other hard hit cities. We had a non-stop flight so we were good. Our flight was full as everyone from the other flights was trying to get to MCO as well. It was a bumpy but uneventful flight.
We landed late (9:20 pm) due to a delay in Dallas but we were glad to be there. They made us check our carry on at the gate – they said it was too big but we have carried it on many times before. We had to wait for our bad then grabbed a Lyft to the hotel. We finally got there at 10:00pm. We were upgraded to a resort view which was nice.
We were exhausted but hungry. We decided to eat the sushi place Kimono’s at the Swan. It closed at 11pm so we just had enough time for a drink and some sushi. It was pretty good. The smoked salmon sashimi was the best we had ever had. We ordered some edamame, smoked salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi and three 3 rolls plus two drinks. Our total plus tip was right at $100.
After dinner, we went to our room, exhausted and slid in to our two queen beds to enjoy our own personal space
