Shoppers Drug Mart GC Promo Mid-Nov?

Hi All,

Getting myself organized for a big November with Shop the Block (Airmiles) and gaining as many PC points as possible! I recall last year Shoppers had a promo where you purchase a Shoppers GC and receive a large sum of PC points (ie: 10,000 for $75 or 20,000 for $100). I purchase ONLY Shoppers GC’s (not restaurant because we rarely eat out). Does anyone recall which weekend this promo typically takes place? I’m thinking mid to late Nov (weekend of the 17th or 24th). Thanks in advance

Typically in November (usually the first or second weekend) there is an offer at Shoppers Drugmart where if you buy $X in giftcards (Not Shoppers GC) you will get bonus points (last year was spend $200 get 8000 points). You usually have to buy 2 or more cards (can be for the same place, so 2 $100 GC for Disney is what I did last year) and again, these are not shoppers gc's. I am not an expert on Shoppers points any more, I haven't used it much since the merger with PC. In the past you would get points when you bought a regular shoppers giftcard as a standard. I often would buy a GC for my purchase amount, then use it to pay off the purchase and earn points on both transactions.

Everything above is correct except that shoppers gift cards were included in the spend $200 get 8000 pts with two different gift cards. I think it is always the first weekend, but it could have been the second weekend which means perhaps the gift card deal died when Optimum did. Last year we bought $2400 in disney gift cards on this deal(3 optimum accounts). Hopefully they have it again this year.

Are Disney gift cards usable in Disney restaurants? And are the amounts translated to USD? For example if I paid $100 Cdn to buy a Disney gift card before our trip, would it be $100 USD when paying in restaurants or gift stores in the parks down there?

Yes you can use them at WDW, at current USD CAD exchange rate.

Unfortunately, I think this deal is dead as the credit card deal always coincided with Beauty week which begins in 2 days. But you never know! The past dates were as follows:

2017, Nov 4-9, $200 gc, get 8k Shoppers points
2016, Nov 5-11, $200 gc, get 8k Shoppers points
2015, Nov 7-12, $175 gc, get 8k Shoppers points
2014, Nov 8-13, $200 gc, get 8k Shoppers points (the $200 isn't a typo, if I recall, massive gc churning in 2013 promo, they shut the gc deal down early, surprised the promo continued)
2013, Nov 9-15, $150 gc, get 8k Shoppers points
2012, Nov 10-16, $150 gc, get 8k Shoppers points

Looks like it is still there, just extremely minimal and very exclusive. Only 5-6 options and Disney is not one of them.

That's one of their regular gc promos, the good one is once a year, all gift cards. Wouldn't be that many points either. Fingers crossed for next week.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I didn’t even consider there may be changes with Optimum and PC colliding this year. I seem to recall that I had to wait a short period (10 days or so) before the PC points posted and I believe I was able to confirm they did somewhere around the 21st of Nov.

I wish Shoppers would just open all GC purchases to include points (subject to a minimum of course. There has to be some fine print). Could you imagine how much more revenue they’d gain?!

That's one of their regular gc promos, the good one is once a year, all gift cards. Wouldn't be that many points either. Fingers crossed for next week.

Gift cards are a massive risk to retailers because they are a massive cash cow to people laundering money. Hence why there are so many restrictions on gift card purchases/usage...

I keep checking every week anyway and was super happy to see Indiho cards on sale 15% off one week. I’ll save them for when indigo puts the American girls on sale for 20% off and double save! Thanks again to you guys for posting about these deals and helping me find others even if Disney doesn’t happen.

No, you can't buy gift cards with shoppers gift cards. I can also tell you that I have purchased Disney gift cards at the shoppers at cataraqui town centre and the shoppers on Taylor Kidd by the Metro. Check those out.
