SHIP OF FOOLS SISTERHOOD - Strong & Healthy in 2005!!!

Hello ladies, I haven't been here for a while . I see some new people..that's great! This is a very welcoming bunch.

Due to my laziness , I'm starting the year out with Nutrisystem Meals of which I was very skeptical (how good could the ready-to-eat meals be if they DON"T require refrigeration?). Well I tried my first lunch meal,a chicken chili pasta, and it was NOT half bad! I'm a bit of a foodie so I thought this would be difficult(that is eating small portion RTE's not exactly gourmet...for 30 days), but I think I can do it.

The water thing is quite necessary though since I find the food a bit salty. The water also fills you up quite a bit.

I have to admit that WW is a better plan for the long run though.

About eating on the cruise.... I've been told that there is such a variety of fresh fruits and veggies and healthy stuff, that there shouldn't be a prob eating well. I guess we can half our portions too.

Throw in a daily walk or organized excercise event and ya kinda have a "spa cruise" . Who knows , if we all use our imaginations ,we can maybe even lose a few lbs..

Is this realistic? I've never been on a cruise before. I must admit that I won't be able to resist a great chocolate treat though. Oh ,can't forget about some great vino too. How does that fit into WW's plan?

I don't blame you!

You can't see a movie without BUTTERY POPCORN!LOL

Full agreement here on the popcorn! I simply CANNOT go to a movie theatre and NOT have some (with butter too  ) Good thing we don't go too often ~ I have an air popper at home and make my own (although it's impossible to eat without adding at least a little something: I use "can't believe it's not butter light" and mix a spoonful into the popcorn.

Night-time snacking is a BIG problem here. I eat fairly well all day ~ then Martin comes home. He has absolutely NO weight problems, but loves "snacking" at night. I just counted his stockpile, and currently there are ... get ready for this, Sisters ... 6 Bags of BBQ chips, 4 Bags of Regular Ruffles, 10 bags of Kettle-cooked Salt and Malt Vinegar chips, 3 bags of Cheetos, 3 bags of cheese Doritos, and 2 bags of tortilla chips!!!!! :earseek: :earseek:

THEN he gives me the wide-eyed innocent look and says "but you and Lara LIKE the kettle cooked chips" and "I got the tortilla chips to go with the salsa YOU bought". EVERY NIGHT, after dinner, he will be on the couch with at least one and sometimes two bags of snacks open. Ever polite, he always asks "do you want some"??? Never mind the FOUR different flavours of ice cream he keeps in the freezer ...

I'm spending more time online in the evenings and less time with him in front of the TV (I can't snack and type at the same time :D ) but he wants me to keep him company! I've asked him "don't you want me to lose weight?" He says it would be nice, but since in his terms I'm "overweight" but not "fat" he doesn't see any problem with having the snacks here.

It gets really hard fighting the temptations, but I know I'm just wasting points that could be much better spent.

Sorry for the rant ... just explaining what drives me to the air-popper more often than I should. :flower1:

Hope everyone's having a great day!

Arlene

Arlene, if you don't mind my asking...Why is it that Asians are not overweight???? I have yet to see an overweight Asians!! They must be doing something right!!! :D

Uh, all those snacks!! :earseek: Boy it must be soo hard for you to watch him eat!!! My wish is to eat anything i want and not gain a pound!!! :guilty: I feel for you Arlene!! NOT FAIR, JUST NOT FAIR AT ALL!!!! You are free to rant here anytime!!!

I agree with the popcorn. We don't go to the movies often, but I have to get a large popcorn with extra butter and salt. And we eat the whole thing. We don't go often though.

As far as snacking goes, it's hard when you have it in the house. It's also hard when your spouse doesn't think you need to lose much or doesn't understand your plight. Here's some suggestions:

Try Ruffles Light, Tostidos Light, Doritos Light. They taste just like like full fat kind (not like the baked). They do have Olestra so if this is a problem for you, this suggestion won't work.

I also have a corn & black bean salsa that is a core food for WW and it isn't very many points (though i haven't calculated it). It's a can of petite diced tomatoes (drained), black beans (drained and rinsed), and corn (drained). Check the label on the corn because it all has sugar and the brands vary in calories. Mix all three cans and add onion as desired. Add some lime juice to taste and salsa spices (cumin, salt, pepper, paprika, whatever sounds good). That's it!

Wine: 2 points for a 4 ounce glass. I'm sure that doesn't hold true for dessert wines, but your typical whites, reds and roses are 2 points. Beer: 1 12oz can/bottle is 2 points, light beer 2 12oz cans/bottles are 3 points. Alcohol varies between 1-2 points per ounce, but a rum and Diet Coke is 1 point!

Carla, I generally gain a little weight on every cruise, but a good share of it is gone after a week due to water weight and the traveling. I eat what I want, use the stairs alot, snorkel or swim on excursions and generally walk around alot. I haven't worked out on the cruises, but if you did, you may even lose weight.

Barbara, we're we going to have some words of wisdom about getting moving this week? I'm proud to say that I have missed only 3 days of working out this year and the 1st was one of them (hadn't made up my mind to work out alot at that point yet).

Well, it sure isn't his diet, so it must be something genetic! I enjoy diet pop, so craving "real" pop isn't a problem for me. However, he LOVES his pop (takes two or three cans to work PLUS has another couple at home every night.) His pop stash is generally around 30 cases! The "Coke Card" was the first thing he got in line for on the cruise - even before lunch! :D

The family joke while everyone was preparing for Y2K was that NO preparations were needed - everyone was just coming to our house; Martin had been prepared for years! He enjoys grocery shopping for bargains, and believes in NEVER running out of anything. Trust me, it took a while to get used to it!

Tracy - I have a WW question for you. I haven't been able to re-join a meeting group in my area (they cancelled the lunchtime meeting near my office :guilty: ) but I have all the materials from my last attempt. This will be my "online" program! :cheer2:

I started recording everything I eat and their point values (flex plan). However, it's not unusual to have a bunch of points left at the end of the day. (Today I still have nine after finishing dinner, but I ate all three meals.)

Is it OK to have so many left, or am I sabotaging my weight loss efforts by not eating enough? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Sabotage!!!!! You must eat all your points each day. You have a minimum amount. If you haven't done WW for a while, they did change the program. You don't have a range anymore. You have a set amount. I recall that 150-175 pounds is 22 points. Every 25 points is 2 more points. You then have 35 flex points to use as you wish all week. You must eat the minimum or you're basically starving yourself. Your body will stop allowing you to lose weight. Here's a suggestion that some have felt works. Vary your points every day so that one day you eat a lot more than others. That way when you are low on points, your body won't conserve. Hope this helps!

My Dh has yet to start WW at work....Waiting for it to get started there!!!!

Ahoy Sisters! Sorry I have been MIA. We left Friday at noon for Sea World, San Diego to celebrate dd's bday, and we just got back late last night. Kids and I had today off, and I took dd to get her ears pierced for her bday (tomorrow), picked up the dog from the kennel, picked up her dolphin cake, and made arrangements for her pizza party at school tomorrow. Then, tonight dh and I wrapped all her gifts....So, this is quick, but this week.......

GET MOVING!!!!!!!

Do what is the most fun for you! Dh and I are going to start by walking at 5 a.m. each day. Be sure to warm up for five minutes, and stretch afterwards...do not bounce, but stretch gently. Start with what feels best...as little as 5 to 10 minutes a day depending on your fitness levels. Since my surgery, I'm taking it easy as my stomach still swells up to look like I'm 3 months prego at the end of the day, more on busy days. So, I am personally taking it slow.

Everyone, what works for you??? We have a treadmill, I like to do free weights and will share a program with you all later, and plan to do the Windsor Pilates DVD program that my dear SIL recommended. I also enjoy step aerobics but don't have the time to get to the gym. With kids, I must workout in the early a.m. Gone are the days of evenings at the gym. Dh and I "might" sign up for a line dancing class just one night and let ds sit dd...we're looking in to it.

Anyone else?

More to follow...stand by!

I'm proud of you all!!!

Barbara

Hi Barbara!! Glad you had a great weekend!!! How was Sea World??

I am sorry but i aint' walking each morning here in my neighborhood!!! Not when it is Below zero freezing!!!! :earseek: :earseek: :earseek:
Not everyone has weather like CA!!!!

LOL!!, I know you mean well, Barbara!! I really should get myself back to Curves again...This cold weather makes me stay indoors!!

This is a live chat tonight, but i am sure you will be busy...Have fun with your DD!!!!

Thanks for the "pep-talk" Barbara. Gotta agree with Melinda, though - There's no California weather around here for walking in the mornings! :earseek: :earseek: We're under a cold weather alert - Today's temp was -24C, with windchill it was-37

I'm home today because Lara's fighting a cold/sore throat and I didn't want her going outside in the bitter cold.

I've already had 3/4 of my water for the day, and I'm having a better day balancing my points. :cheer2: Those 9 left over yesterday were a problem, so I used more for breakfast and lunch, only leaving 14 to go out for dinner with tonight. Friends from South Carolina are visiting and really want to go out for Japanese food, so we're still planning to go if Lara's feeling better and has a nap this afternoon.

4 pieces of sushi is only 2 points, so I can order a sushi dinner, along with soup and a salad and still not go into my "extra" points for the week.

"I think I can, I think I can ... "

Sorry I have been MIA, busy weekend.

Tomorrow is my momoent of truth..weigh-in day. I will see if the scale is actually capable of moving in the down direction.

DH and I like to walk. When it is nice out, we go for 3 mile walks with DD in the stroller. But, the rest of the time is on the treadmill, but only 1.5 miles. There is no time for each of us to be on the treadmill for an hour.

I only have 1 more glass of water to meet my requirements. I try to use all my points, but I usually have 1 or 2 left. I am just not hungry.

Luckily I don't crave the salty foods, so having all those snacks around wouldn't bother me. DH is also doing WW, so it is easier.

Keep up the good work.

Cruising does offer lots of healthy foods. It is just so hard to choose those over the good stuff.

Apparently, the scale is not capable of moving in the down direction. Neither DH nor myself lost anything. Very frustrated today.

How disappointing, Denine! How long have you both been on WW?

Also, maybe you're losing inches instead of pounds right now; I've heard it's a good idea to monitor both.

Here's hoping for a great week ahead for you. :wizard:

Arlene

Arlene, this was our 2nd weigh in. I had hoped for at least a pound.

We will keep going. I don't feel (or look) like I have lost inches either.

I am drinking my water though.

Don't sweat it Denine. You can be off from week to week because of hormones, stress, all kinds of things. Next week will be better!
