Shattering my childrens' dreams

Have you ever done this? I've done it before and you'd think I'd learn my lesson.

Boys have their heart set on a sleek new computer for Christmas. Now, I happen to know that Santa will be bringing it, but I got the feeling that they are getting too confident in believing that Santa WILL bring it. I want them to be SURPRISED Christmas morning.

So I start the whole song and dance about how I doubt that they'll get something that elaborate for Christmas and how they can still wish, but I don't see it happening...bla bla bla

I guess they really must have believed me because they went off to school real, real depressed! When I saw how they were buying it, I did try to cover my butt by saying "oh maybe it will happen...you never know..."

I feel so bad! I'm such a mean mom - couldn't let them have their little dreams for 3 more days, could I?

Hannah really wants a Pottery Barn kitchen/laundry room set. Santa told her that he wil see what he and the elves can do, but if he can't do that, he thought she might enjoy a surprise. She is not getting it. I hope she forgets about it when she sees all the other wonderful gifts she receives.

I understand. DD wants an Ipod. She's getting one, but I've had to tell her numerous times that they are just to expensive what with upcoming college expenses. She really doesn't think she's getting one.

OP, Just think how happy they will be when they see what Santa has brought them!

I'm doing the same thing with the cell phone. DD really thinks that there is NO WAY that I would buy it for her (and honestly, I am NOT thrilled about it). I think she will be shocked.

That is half the fun of being a parent on Christmas. The kids want a dog and we have said MANY, MANY times no way, no how because they can't even keep their rooms clean how on earth will they care for a dog (she comes home tomorrow, they are going to FLIP when they see her!!!).

...messing with their minds! Yep, the sick side of me loves it!

I still have one Santa believer, and I can't believe the stories that I spew forth half the time!

I did that with my daughters IPOD. I told her there was no way she would ever get something like that.

I thought that's why you had kids. So you can mess with their minds. Always puts a smile on my face. Plus they shouldn't get too comfotable in thinking that whatever they ask for they get.

I can't wait for DD to see her computer. She isn't even expecting it. She didn't bother asking Santa because she asked last year and didn't get it. But she has made it clear all year how much she needs a computer. I haven't let her touch mine in 6 months, wanted her to really be thankful at Christmas.

Did you ever hear the Steve Martin schtick on having kids and "talking wrong" to them so when they go to school they will ask the teacher things like "can I momma dog patch in the garden" when they really have to go to the bathroom? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

My grandfather taught my cousin to call a light a "not heavy."

I did that w/a cd set my daughter wanted of Malice Mizer for Christmas. She kept asking about it, and I told her it hadn't come in (it really arrived less than a week after ordering it). Her friend had received it, and I was going to tell my dd that they were out of stock, but she was so crestfallen I told her that it was backordered, and it wouldn't be here for Christmas. It was worth it when she saw the box & recognized it for what it was. :teeth: (My kids already received their Christmas gifts from me this year since they're going to be w/their dad until the 29th.)

You should charge it up and when she is looking under the tree for presents to open, dial the phone number from the house phone so she hears a present ringing. :rotfl:

That is exactly what we did for our DD last year. We hid the phone in the branches of the tree on Christmas Eve. Then, while opening presents I went in the other room and called the phone. The look on her face, when she realized the phone was hers, was priceless!
