Sharps Container

This year will be my first trip with injectable meds. I have a question about sharps containers. Is that something we can request for our room, or do we need to bring our own? We went on a cruise earlier this year and they provided on for us in our cabin. I don't know if that's common or just somerhing that cruises do.

Also, any tips about flying with injectable meds? It's a pen type, with separate needles, and in a separate bag with only medical stuff.

Check on line with your airline, they should have some guidelines for you. But what I have done, and I was very worried when I flew the first time I had injectables, is put the needle and syringe in a plastic bag and my medicine with a prescription label in another plastic bag before going through the scanner at the airport. I put them in one of the plastic containers that gets scanned with your carry-on items and have never had an issue. I only inject one time per week, so I only had one needle with me. But my airline said having the prescription with the meds would help if you got stopped. I was never stopped or had any issues. Good luck. I've now flown to WDW 4 times and I'm not sure now what I was worried about. It's second nature to me now. Good luck. Since my needle comes with a plastic cap, I secure the cap, tape it on, put it in a plastic bag and throw it in the garbage.

You can request a sharps container at your resort at WDW. Many of the restrooms in the parks now also have sharps containers.

As far as flying goes, declaring that they're in a separate bag with other medical supplies when going through TSA should be all you need. Having a copy of your prescription could be useful, but you probably won't need it. That said, it's always a good idea to bring prescriptions with you when you travel just in case something happens and you need to get medications refilled. While it's possible to do so other ways, it's much more difficult.

I spoke to Disney UK about this over the weekend as although I have a sharps travel container I don't particularly want to take used needles home if I can leave them there.

They said to request something at check-in and they can dispose of at the end of the holiday.

The company that supply my meds have given me a letter to travel with for security and immigration.

I used to get a note from my doctor explaining why I had the medication and syringes, but nobody ever asked for it so I stopped getting it. I just make sure everything's in its original container with prescription label in my carryon bag, and it all goes through the airport checkin without incident.

The Disney resorts will supply you with a sharps container on request. I've had varying levels of success at other resorts and hotels, though. In a pinch you can use an empty soda bottle (with its cap, of course) for your used syringes and needles.

I flew to Orlando last week with injectable medicine that also needed refrigeration. I just froze one of the gel packs that it is shipped with and put the gel pack, the vials of meds and all supplies in a small, insulated lunch bag. I just sent the bag through security with everything else. I have done this numerous times and have never been questioned, even with the gel pack.

Disney resorts will provide one on request and all WDW restrooms and First Aid have sharps containers.

If you use an empty soda bottle, make sure that the needles are securely sheathed (covered). Soda bottles are thin plastic that can easily be pierced by anything sharp. You also want to make it obvious that they contain sharps - since Disney is very in to recycling, soda bottles could easily end up in the recycling. Also keep in mind that many of the Housekeeping staff do not necessarily speak good English, so may not be able to read signs.

I'm surprised they have never caught your gel pack. It may be because it was frozen pretty solid - if frozen, it is not handled as a liquid. Here's a link to the TSA page for travelers with disabilities and medical conditions.

We've had things show up multiple times on the scan. Once it was a banana wrapped in foil (the foil was the issue) and once it was a loaf of banana bread (the size and density was an issue).
It's good to keep everything together and just declare them as medical liquids.
