We have been taking our son to SOG since he was 7.....he is now 12. I have to say that we had never been to a WDW themed hotel previously, so I guess you don't miss what you don't know.......my son loved SOG! It was at WDW and that was all he cared about. Everytime we see a picture of a palm tree he says.........Look mom, Shades of Green....Wish we could be there.
The hotel was very nice before the remodeling. It was a bit of a ratmaze in that the hallways made several turns so if you were at the end of a hall, you had quite a hike to the lobby. We always requested a close room on the floor of the lobby, which at that time was actually 2nd floor, so we could get to the bus stop quickly (keep track of the bus schedule and you will never have to use your car.....you are right next to TTC and monorail). Those first rooms were a little noisy (you could hear light mumbling as people walked down the hall) during peak times of the day because everyone had to pass you to get to the other rooms, but we did not mind. For the most part, everyone there was very friendly since we are all in the same boat (military). The staff was fantastic. We once forgot our cell phone plugged in beside the bed and feared housekeeping would either steal it or charge calls to it, but neither happened. Very honest. Same went with my rolls of quarters left on the dresser I used for pressed coins......still there when I returned to the room. Nice laundry room with several washers/driers and a tv in there too if you want to stay. I never stayed and never had my laundry stolen. The restaurant in the lobby had a really decent breakfast buffet that was cheap. Never ate the dinner...it was a themed buffet each night during certain hours. We enjoyed the Sports grill next to the pool. GREAT FOOD reasonably priced....try the onion rings. Small arcade and pool table in there. They do have room service in the rooms, but I tried the pizza, which is cheap, on several occassions (different years) and IMO the pizza is terrible. Not sure how much time you stay at the hotel, but for us, we only use hotel for shower and sleep and spend the rest of the time in the parks, so resort decor is not important to us. Enjoy your trip.
