~~~SEWING my way to POFQ ~ American Girl outfits & Custom Park Bags! ~~~
I LOVE that idea! Our last two trips to Disney we stayed in time shares with the in-laws. Once at a place next door to the Lipizzaner Stallions show and the other time was at Wyndham Bonnet Creek. Both had tons of room - and from the Disboutiquers thread I've learned there are lots of great fabric stores near The World :)
I agree - it would be a ton of fun! So, would our machines be carry-ons then? :confused3
Poor Patience!!! And poor D!!!! Frannie's friend Button is being a stinker and has me very frustrated right now. I hope Patience's repairs are quick and easy and inexpensive and that you're able to get them done while you're on your sewing break this week!
Yah, I didn't take Patience or Mr. Rocket in yesterday... I need to find a different OSMG... This one kept offering me rediculous low ball amounts for Mr. Rocket. He told me "I don't charge you unless I can fix it" - I told him that was nice. :thumbsup2 Then he said (after making me 2 other lowball offers) "If I can't fix it, will you sell it to me for $10?" I said "No, if you can't fix it, I am taking it home and dropping it out of my highest window... You can come by and clean up the parts, if you'd like." LOL When we were trying to figure out what time I should drop Mr. Rocket off, he kept tryiing to get me to sell him - and eventually offered me $2 for each of the cams. It was starting to make me nervous. I talked to Dh, and we came to the conclusion that I might not ever see Mr. Rocket again if I bring him to this guy - he'd probably keep him for a few days - tell me that he couldn't fix it - then buy it off of me - then I'd see it on Craigslist a few weeks later all fixed up. Nope... I'll find another OSMG... Thanks a bunch! :confused3 You know, when your gut tells you something, you just need to listen.
We have someone here that refurbs old machines but you end up paying around $200 for a machine that way! But someone that refurbs may indeed have a part to sell you. You must get Patience back to her normal self!
Oh no... this guy didn't want to sell me nothing - he wanted my machine. It's a nice machine, but he was borderline harassing me about it... No thanks - I'll keep looking. :surfweb: I know when I was first looking at vintage machines, there was an owner in one of the antique shops that said there was a guy nearby... I might have to go talk to her again.
Those outfits were from a couple of years ago so chances are you didn't see them. My hand applique turned out almost perfect on dd's and I loved the leopard prints in the different colors -- they were a quilters pack and were really expensive, but for dd I sometimes splurge.
Yup - definately love the applique and love the fabrics, it was an adorable dress! :lovestruc
I am now in the process of trying to find some used items for dd for Christmas -- she wants the AG Palomino and likes some of the dogs and cats. I found a dog and cat set on Craig's list so I e-mailed them and am hopeful it's in good condition and still for sale. The good condition horses on e-bay are about as expensive as new ones! I'm watching some though. I even went up to the attic to get down two cabbage patch horses, but her doll keeps falling off of them -- I think they are a little wide.
I know, those horses go for insane amounts of $$... I know that target sells some that are similar for a decent price. The are with their Our Generation dolls - and even though they don't have the "fur" coating on them, they are still pretty good quality - and definately the perfect size for AGs. :thumbsup2
I am trying to move it but I can't -- and it appears moveable -- I just don't want to overdo it and break it. I will ask Candace about it (she's the one that gave me the machine). In the mean time, while the bobbins are not the same size I am able to wind them on my old machine which works fine for me because then I don't have to rethread!
Hmmm... That is strange that it won't move. It should - I think.
Everything D makes for her AG doll dresses and her bags is hand appliqued -- you do that using a satin stitch (tight zig zag) on a regular machine. The dress I just posted with Daisy on Mickey on it are hand appliqued too. They also make embroidery machines though in which the machine stitches designs you buy out for you. Come over to the Disboutiquers thread if you're really interested in learning.
I saw that you found the Disbou thread. :thumbsup2 Glad to see you in both places... The people over there are so friendly and helpful - I woulnd't know how to do anything if it wasn't for them.
that is the cutest donald, ever!
I know... I actually have the Jim Shore version - and I just love it. :lovestruc I have a few of the Jim Shore Donalds - but I could always use another - Josh usually gets them for me for Christmas... I have a wall of Donald figurines on the wall above my PC monitor.
OMGoodness!!!! You ladies just amaze me with your sewing skills!!! I have tried sewing in the past but my machine was of the devil I tell ya and it would break every single time I would start. (that's what I get for getting a cheap W-M one to "try") :rolleyes1
So you both put the characters on the dresses yourself or is there some special machine that does it for you? I would LOVE to make customs like you do but I would have no idea where to start!
Welcome!!! Andrea already explained the process, and invited you to the Disbou thread (thanks Andrea - the "official Co-Capt. of my PTR)... I hope you'll continue to follow along here too. :lovestruc
So, I already told you all about my machine saga (above somewhere in this post)...
I spent the rest of the day cleaning and grocery shopping. Cleaned out all the appliances (except the oven - I don't do ovens), bleached my counter tops, washed my garbage cans. Josh finished mudding/taping/painting one of the windows in the kitchen. The girls organized all of our cupboards while we were grocery shopping for TG... Well, V did - A is still experiencing "technology withdrawl" from her 3 days away, this last week, at a courage retreat - so she spent her day attached to no less than 3 gadgets at a time. Once I got all the groceries put away, V and I went around washing windows, inside and outside... We have the kind the tilt in - but we got our first snow yesterday - so it was a bit chilly when we had them open. I plan to work on our office today (which is a HUGE task - it will probably take us all day, since this is where our AG collection resides). I work tomorrow. I plan to sew all day on Tuesday - and bleach my floors in the morning. Wednesday is my food prep day... So, I'll be making anything I can make ahead of time. I will be in bed by 5pm, so I can go to work at 2am on Thursday. Crazy week ahead of me, I'll be glad when it's over. :lovestruc
He definitely sounds like he was trying to get your machines for next to nothing. I am sure you would have seen them up for resale again in a few weeks, after he fixed them. You were right to listen to your instincts.
I bought my girls the Our Generation horses. It was the one thing that I bought from the Target collection. The horses were great. They were just the right size, came with a LOT of accessories and my girls played with them constantly. The best part is that I was able to buy them on sale at Target for half off so they only cost like $20, which is a fraction of what the AG horses cost. We actually have Kaya's horse because I bought Kaya, the horse and a bunch of other stuff from some lady on Craigslist. The Target horse have lasted better than the AG horse because the body is plastic instead of fur coated.
Wow sounds like you had a super busy day! You will definitely be ready for all your company by Thanksgiving. I bought all the stuff to make your make ahead potatoes. I have a few other things that I still need to buy for Thanksgiving but I am pretty much done shopping too.
Well, since YOU asked and since I'm in the process of hogging your ptr today, here is a pic and it is showing the arm and shoulder that is trashed -- that tattoo cover makeup cost $25 but it surely worked -- I was scraped and bruised on the shoulder and upper arm and this photo is untouched (note how enthusiastic my dh is -- reminds me of how he was in Disney!).
P6060065.jpg
WOW Andrea what a beautiful dress and you were the "hot" momma that night.
D~ is a bit sad tonight... I was quilting a bag and I didn't see a pin... I hit the pin head at full throttle and I bent Patience's needle bar. :eek: Not bad but just a fraction of a millimeter - enough that I notice - you know me, I notice everything. I never knew that you could break a needle so badly that it still remains bent after it's broken... I am never that careless. I am just so sad, I don't know what to do. I tried to bend it back, but I just don't have the strength - and after my fiasco with Mr. Rocket - I am really feeling deflated. I am hoping I can talk my muscle-y DH into trying to bend the needle bar back for me. :wizard:
D~
Hopefully you can get her repaired quickly.
And just so you don't worry too much, Donald was on the front of ds's shirt:
I know I have a pic of dd and Donald at MK too! Shall I go look for that as well?
Andrea these are awesome. I want to see all your pics.
Your week does not sound like fun! At least you got a good amount of cleaning done yesterday though. I have to do tons of laundry today because I am soooo behind. I just went grocery shopping too and even though I got to the commissary at 0804, it was already packed! But I bought my potatoes to make your potato recipe! And we have a turkey -- dh will makeit on Wednesday and carve it and will will just take some with us and heat it up at the cabin.
I want you to know you have given me a :headache: and have made me exhausted just thinking about your week!
I'd steer clear of that sewing machine guru -- he sounds like t-r-o-u-b-l-e!!! I think he has Rocket envy.
My dd sadly has her heart set on the Palomino. I am watching a couple on e-bay, but even used they don't appear to sell for very reasonable. I also need to sew clothes for her doll. She's griping that the girl has no jammies. I actually think I may have a pair cut out and never sewed them up b/c she's so off and on with playing with the doll. I promised I'd buy her a wig brush this weekend -- she wants the dolls hair to be done like hers is every day now. Anywho, all I have left on my Vida is the elastic and button holes, so between all my laundry and ironing maybe poor Samantha can have some jammies.
My dd really wants the AG Palomino, so unless Target has an identical one I think I'm stuck! There was only one horse on Craig's list and it was $900 as it was being sold in a lot. I'm watching e-bay now to see what they sell for in general and then will go from there. Buy it now ones are close to full price though. DD has also been asking to go to DC to the store, so maybe I will do that for her b-day (though I'm sure they're closed on her b-day, but maybe the weekend prior -- which means it will be packed with Xmas shoppers).
WOW Andrea what a beautiful dress and you were the "hot" momma that night.
Andrea these are awesome. I want to see all your pics.
Even Figment on VHS:lmao:
I purposely did not buy a black dress b/c I figured a lot of people would wear black. Likewise, I found that dress at TJMaxx -- having it hemmed cost about as much as the dress cost! Every single female there was wearing black!!! And the Captain's wife had on a cocktail dress :confused3 which to me was very inappropriate but whatever. So I guess I was the hot mama after all!
You want me to post pics of all my old outfits? I guess D's ptr would be the most appropriate place to do so. I think we should all crash her ptr while she's at work on Black Friday!
Andrea- Make sure you check the AG website on Cyber Monday. When my girls were younger and really into the dolls, they had some great deals that day. However, you have to get up super early and order what you want first thing. One time, I got up at 4 am to get what we wanted. I don't know if they will have the horse or not but it will be worth checking on it.
Thanks -- I had no idea they did cyber Monday specials. Hopefully they will e-mail them to me because I just signed up for a new catalogue seeing as the only two we have are from last year.
Oh Cheryl, that is so nice of you to offer to buy it for me and drive it down here in time for Alexa's birthday. You're a peach! Could you get me a Singer 401 as well?
I will save you the trouble of finding Coconut and licorice since someone local has those available. Of course, now dd wants Rascal instead of Licorice, but in price comparing my Craig's list find to that of e-bay, Licorice it is and dd had better not complain!
I know... I don't mind people asking once or twic - but this guy just wouldn't let it go. And it's not like a swayed in my answer at all... It was always a firm NO.
I never did buy the horses from Target - but have heard great things about them from so many people.
We bought the wardrobes though - those are great! They are kind of expensive (not as expensive as AG's) at $50+/each - unless you get them on sale. But very worth it... we've had ours for several years (at least 6) and they have held up really well. Allison's is starting to fall apart, but her's it the first one we got, and the girls slid it around on the floor a lot before Josh hung them on the wall. I highly recommend them for storage, you can really hang a lot in them - just not the really long dresses.
This is how we have our AG stuff set up currently - the photo was taken last Feb, but we really haven't added much since then:
Wow sounds like you had a super busy day! You will definitely be ready for all your company by Thanksgiving. I bought all the stuff to make your make ahead potatoes. I have a few other things that I still need to buy for Thanksgiving but I am pretty much done shopping too.
I still feel like I have a lot to get done. Josh has been working feverishly getting all our windows done inside from when we replaced them 2 years ago... So, I can't get everything done that I'd like, since there is sheetrock dust everywhere. But I am really glad that this has motivated him - I was so used to seeing the open areas by the windows, that I just didn't notice it anymore. :cool1:
Hopefully you can get her repaired quickly.
I hope so... :wizard:
When we shopped, it was really packed too... And Josh and I were driving 2 carts - so that made it worse. We never grocery shop together, and adding 2 carts to the mix just made it insane. :rolleyes1
I'd steer clear of that sewing machine guru -- he sounds like t-r-o-u-b-l-e!!! I think he has Rocket envy.
I agree, AG always has some super CM sales... but the collectors stalk the sale page at midnight, so if you want the most selection, you need to be on there right at midnight, and keep refreshing until they update the sales.
I landed Molly's stage one year for $25 (reg price, I don't remember, but it was $125+) and that same year, the matching theatre seats were $20 each, so I got 2, I don't have any pictures of the seats - but I am sure you can google and see them.
Wow Cheryl... That is soooo nice of you to offer. I haven't even bothered to look at CL in our area.
:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl2:
They never send them out in email. They post them on their sale page at Midnight Monday morning, and the sooner you get there, the best selection you have. Once things sell out, they are gone and AG removes them from the page. Most people sit there at Midnight watching, and refresh the page until the new sales appear - if you are a die hard, that is. :lovestruc
Well, you have to wonder! He seem VERY interested in Mr. Rocket!
He was, and it scared me. :rolleyes1
Anyways... I have to work all day today.
I am kind of excited, DH and I splurged yesterday, and purchased a new Cuisinart coffee pot... Ours was on it's last legs. We are $15 coffee pot people, well we got tired of them only lasting a year (max), so we thought we'd try one of these... For as much as we paid for it - it better last longer than a year!
I am looking forward to getting into my sewing room tomorrow - I have high hopes of being close to completing the bag I am working on before TG.
D~
I love how you have everything set up. I think that hanging the wardrobes on the wall with the pole between them was brilliant. What a great way to store your collection. And what an awesome collection. I don't think I've ever seen so many dolls outside the store.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I am glad that everyone is making the make-ahead recipe I posted... They really are sooooo good. :rolleyes1
We did a trial run of the potatoes last night to go with dinner (I made 1/4 of the recipe) and they were great! DD loved helping mash the potatoes. Mashed potatoes are her favorite food so she was very into helping. Maybe she will make them on Thursday. She can do pretty much everything except drain the boiling water from the potatoes.
I agree that they never send out an email with what is on sale. I have gotten emails saying that they have a Cyber Monday sale but there are never any specifics. In the years that I looked at the sale, they never had any dolls on there. Just clothes, furniture and accessories. However, I have scored matching outfits for my girls and their dolls for more than half off. Plus one year I got Kit's stove for like $30 plus they also had the accessory set on a great sale too. It came with food, cooking pots and an apron for like $12. You got an awesome deal on Molly's stage. I think my girls would have liked that better than Kit's stove. If you don't get on the website very early then you can't get through. The website crashes or won't complete your sale. One year I woke up later than I wanted so I spent nearly an hour calling on the phone until I got through and I placed my order by phone. Midnight does sound like the time to get on the computer to hit the sale!
I am kind of excited, DH and I splurged yesterday, and purchased a new Cuisinart coffee pot... Ours was on it's last legs. We are $15 coffee pot people, well we got tired of them only lasting a year (max), so we thought we'd try one of these... For as much as we paid for it - it better last longer than a year!
I am looking forward to getting into my sewing room tomorrow - I have high hopes of being close to completing the bag I am working on before TG.
D~
Your new coffee pot sounds great. I am sure it will last more than a year. When my coffee pot broke last year I finally bought myself a Keurig. It is the current love of my life!:love::love::love: I am the only coffee drinker in the house and this way I get a fresh cup every time I want one. But if you and your DH both drink coffee a Cuisinart coffee maker was the way to go. They usually make excellent coffee! My friend has one that grinds the beans and then brews the coffee.
I can't wait to see your newest project. I am hoping to get some sewing done today too. We'll see what the day brings though!
I LOVE my Keurig! For Christmas all my kids went together and bought Dad and I one. It had a problem and Keurig had to send me another one. While we were waiting for the replacement...hubby bought the biggggggg one. We now take the smaller one when we travel. This last trip to Disney we had a line outside our door looking for 'real' coffee! (DIL, SIL, Daughter and son...no strangers!)
OK...now I have to get back to work....no more computer.
D I was very happy to see your AG collection. FInally someone with more dolls than Miss C.
I think I need to do some Christmas shopping in your store for her :) She loves your outfits.
I love my Keurig. I took my mini to work and we are debating a Mini for our owners locker.
We bought the wardrobes though - those are great! They are kind of expensive (not as expensive as AG's) at $50+/each - unless you get them on sale. But very worth it... we've had ours for several years (at least 6) and they have held up really well. Allison's is starting to fall apart, but her's it the first one we got, and the girls slid it around on the floor a lot before Josh hung them on the wall. I highly recommend them for storage, you can really hang a lot in them - just not the really long dresses.
This is how we have our AG stuff set up currently - the photo was taken last Feb, but we really haven't added much since then:
Get to work on those jammies!!! You should be able to put them together in no time. :lovestruc
This is the place to post Andrea... Seeing as I work all day today. :eek:
I agree, AG always has some super CM sales... but the collectors stalk the sale page at midnight, so if you want the most selection, you need to be on there right at midnight, and keep refreshing until they update the sales.
I landed Molly's stage one year for $25 (reg price, I don't remember, but it was $125+) and that same year, the matching theatre seats were $20 each, so I got 2, I don't have any pictures of the seats - but I am sure you can google and see them.
They never send them out in email. They post them on their sale page at Midnight Monday morning, and the sooner you get there, the best selection you have. Once things sell out, they are gone and AG removes them from the page. Most people sit there at Midnight watching, and refresh the page until the new sales appear - if you are a die hard, that is. :lovestruc
Anyways... I have to work all day today.
I love the pics of your doll display -- my dd could do some serious shopping there!
My dd does not want another doll -- she wants ACCESSORIES!!!! She wants lots of pets and some furniture. She wants me to make her clothes to match the clothes I have made for her! We looked at jammies last night as she made her wish list on the AG site and she kept saying "I don't have any of those jammies, I want Samantha to have my jammies." Problem is, I've only made Alexa two nightgowns and since I made them long I don't have left over fabric! I may have a little from one set, but it may be a short sleeve gown she ends up with!
And a BIG GRIPE -- Alexa made her wish list and rather than writing the number down I had it e-mailed to me. It has never shown up in my e-mail and even when I sign into my AG account the list is non-existent! I'm peeved! It's not even in my spam! Grrrrr!!!!
Tomorrow I am meeting the Craig's list lady though -- I'm getting Licorice, her bed, Cocounut, Coconut's house and a few accessories for $20 (providing it's in decent shape which she says it is) so I'm pretty happy about that. I got outbid on e-bay on my horse and I really don't want to bid higher for a used horse. I'd rather buy a new one than spend a lot on a used one.
Good grief, my dh will think I'm nuts waking up at midnight. Of course, I get headaches all the time and wake up at odd hours so I'll just pass it off as that. Or I can tell him much money I saved!
I'm happy for you and your new coffee pot; however, I detest coffee! Have fun working. I won't get much done today -- have to get my haircut in the stupid middle of the day and need to go pick up some shirts for a BG as well. DD has a project for me tonight -- it's making a little wish pillow out of felt and buttons. I think we will fabric glue the embellishments!
We did a trial run of the potatoes last night to go with dinner (I made 1/4 of the recipe) and they were great! DD loved helping mash the potatoes. Mashed potatoes are her favorite food so she was very into helping. Maybe she will make them on Thursday. She can do pretty much everything except drain the boiling water from the potatoes.
I agree that they never send out an email with what is on sale. I have gotten emails saying that they have a Cyber Monday sale but there are never any specifics. In the years that I looked at the sale, they never had any dolls on there. Just clothes, furniture and accessories. However, I have scored matching outfits for my girls and their dolls for more than half off. Plus one year I got Kit's stove for like $30 plus they also had the accessory set on a great sale too. It's the accessories that my dd wants -- thanks for the tip though about logging on early before the site crashes! I will have a list made so I can call if I can't get on line. Those dang accessories are expensive!
How many serving did 1/4 the recipe make? I was going to make half a batch, but my kids don't always like mashed potatoes so I may do just 1/4.
To the Disney Store???
D~
I believe her ds is out of the Navy now! You won't see my sig look like that for another 3 years as dh is not retiring in this economy!
CHERYL: Please thank your son for his service :)
I probably did more than 1/4 of the recipe since I think I used 3 large potatoes. It was a little hard to estimate how much potato to use. Anyhow, it made just the right amount of potatoes for us for a hearty side dish.
I think Cheryl is on her way to the Disney Store right now.
D- I can't wait to see the newest bag! Are you done yet?????
....or is it that your son is off the submarine?
Nini
Yup! After two thousand one hunded ninety one days he's a free man. (That's SIX YEARS for those who don't want to do the math.)
My signature used to read, "Sleep well tonight for somewhere in the ocean's depths my son is protecting our freedom," and now it reads, "Sleep well tonight for somewhere in the ocean's depths submariners are protecting our freedom."
I was always a little unsure about the first version anyway -- on the one hand it makes it sound like I think my son is solely responsible for national security, on the other hand I always thought it humanizes the service when people stop to realize that soldiers, sailors, airpeople, etc. are someone's child, someone's spouse, someone's parent.
Anyway, he's done!
He's applied to UC Santa Barbara. I have to check out when parents weekend is (call me an optimisit, I'm sure half of California wants to go to
UCSB) so I can work in another trip to Disneyland.
:dance3:
PS :wave2: D~ Nice to see you posting on Andrea's PTR.
