Sewing Novice here..!!!!

I got a beautiful queen size down duvet... and was looking at prices of duvet covers ($100!!!! YIKES!), so I am/was thinking about making it myself.

How much material would I need? I would assume I need a heavier material... (but what type?)

Now, I guess the cover, would be like a large pillowcase... what would be the best way to close it... with a zipper or maybe some buttons?

Thanks!

I can't help you with the material measurements but I made a duvet cover for our bed with some beautiful sheets that
I purchased then I sewed some ribbon on the ends to tie it closed. It was lovely if I say so myself! lol

Set of sheets... why didn't I think of that?

Did you use the flat sheets or the ones with the elastic on it? How did you do it?

Did you use the same size sheets (ie Queen for Queen) or did you need to go up a size to allow for hemming and trimming?

What type of sheets did you use? Regular cotton style or flannel?

I have made these many times when my kids would get tired of whatever themed comforter they had at the time. Just get two flat sheets the same size as your duvet. Sew three sides, just like a giant pillow case. My favorite way to close the top is with velcro. Get the kind in the fabric dept. that you sew on, not the sticky back kind.

Ok, that sounds easy enough for a novice like me... (I have a sewing machine, and have NO IDEA how to even use it...)

There's sew on velcro? (Learn something new everyday!)

I did it just like HunnyPots said...I took Queen size flat sheets that had lace on the ends turned the sheets right side in and sewed the 3 sides...I used ribbon since it was for adult but if you are doing it for a child the velcro sounds like a great idea!
The bed I made it for was a double...so I used the queen sheet.

I used a cotton sheets for mine.

Good luck!
