Seven Seas Lagoon to Discovery Island area

I noticed that the Seven Seas Lagoon is connected to the body of water around Discovery Island and River Country, two closed areas of Disney. I am wondering if this area of water is off limits to guests taking a boat out of the Grand Floridian or if one would be allowed to just take a ride in the boat around these areas (of course never getting out of the boat or getting too close to the land). Thought it would be kind of awesome to look at the parts of Disney that have been forgotten!

Yep! We rented one from the Poly last year and rode it right up to river country. We got close enough to snap some photos of how it remains today. Really cool to see. :)

I know Grand Floridian and Poly have boat rentals in that area and from the map, it looks like you can leave the lagoon (there is a bridge you go under) and then it goes into that area where Discovery Island and River Country once were. I can't see anything else in that area but it just fascinates me to see these areas that aren't touched much by Disney anymore. We've been trying to think about what to do with my husband's grandmother when we visit since she lives an hour away, this might be it. Rent a boat and take a ride down there, I am sure she'd appreciate the scenery and I'd appreciate the nostalgia. :D

Renting a boat is a fun and different thing to do at the MK area resorts. You can rent them from the Poly, Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, or even Fort Wilderness. The resorts have a dock where you choose from little 2 person "Water Mouse" boats, mid size Montauk boats, or pontoon boats that seat up to 10 people. No matter which of these resorts you rent from, you can cross the water bridge between the seven seas lagoon and Bay Lake, which is neat because you actually go over the road to MK. There is some large boat traffic, but go with the flow of traffic and you'll be fine. You can boat around and see the beaches of the different resorts, and between the Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness you can see the old River Country waterpark. Most of the lake area is open for you to boat on and explore, except for the North end of Bay Lake where they do the Sammy Duvall watersports, and this area is marked on the map they will give you.

We rented a pontoon boat with just two of us on our honeymoon trip to WDW and loved it. We can't wait to do it again when we go back in September. It is just a nice laid back contrast to a busy day in the parks.

Yes you can but.....don't expect a really great view. The landscaping has been left and it's very overgrown and blocks most of the view. At least this was true as of last spring. River Country is pretty hard to see and Discovery Island is the same. Renting a boat is a great way to spend some time but if seeing two Disney Ghost Towns is your only reason....I wouldn't do it.

Google around a bit. Someone took a nighttime swim to River Country and took photos a number of years ago. I believe they swam over from WL.
