I bought the plans from Best Buy for both of our laptops. My dd's laptop's screen light went out and it was just under a year old. We went to Best Buy and they told us we would have to leave the laptop with them and would "probaby" get it returned to us in around 2 weeks. I brought it back home and called up the Compaq Co., told them what happened. Being it was still under warrenty all we had to do was put it securely in a box. THAT night FedEX came (the co. called them, not us) took the laptop and we got it back 2 days later. I thought that was great. I have extended warrenty's now from the company. We feel we wasted $$ from buying the plan from Best Buy. The same thing happened to us when my iron broke. I bought an iron from best buy(an expensive one) and bought the service plan. When it broke they wanted me to bring it in and they would fix it, leaving me without an iron for 2 weeks. When we bought all the service plans they never told us, nor did we ask, how long it would take for them to have the items serviced. I would never buy a plan from best buy again.
I bought a 3 yr plan from dell for both my laptop and my desktop. It was the best thing I did, nothing happened to my laptop but I screwed up my desktop reoyaly and they came right to my house the next day with in home service.
My 3-year agreement though Best Buy paid for itself and MORE. I had trouble with the port where the charger plugs into the back of the laptop. Sent it away TWICe to be fixed for that.
Just before my agreement ran out, I sent it away through the service plan for "little" quirky things.... After having my computer for 6 weeks, they called me and told me to come to the store and pick out a new laptop because mine was not able to be fixed (I think they lost it). So, brand new computer in the last WEEK of the service agreement.
I've read negative reviews of Best Buy's (and many other retailers') service plans. Generally, I stick with either the manufacturer's service plan, or find a wholly after-market service plan.
