Serious Pixie Dust

I just wanted to share the pixie dust that my family received a few days ago while on our Disney vacation. We had one night booked on points at the Grand Floridian Villas. We had a studio lake view booked for Friday night. Upon checking in, we were told that we had been given an upgrade and were being put in a 2 bedroom lake view for the night. I nearly fell over. It was just my DH, DD, and myself so we didn't need that much room, but there was no way I was turning that down. I didn't think that people staying on points were ever given a free upgrade, as it has never been offered to us before on any of our many, many stays, and I questioned the girl checking us in to be sure it was free as I didn't want to spend that many extra points. She assured me that it was free and I checked my points total when we arrived home and sure enough no extra points were taken. It was a great ending to what had been a perfect vacation. This was our first stay at the Grand Floridian Villas and it was just that, very grand. I will never expect this to happen again, but it was one of the best surprises I had ever been given.

It's wonderful when the unexpected pixie dust gets sprinkled. We just got back from AKV Jambo. Used points for a standard view but were given a beautiful savannah view on Zebra Trail.

Yes upgrades do happen, just not that often. I have gotten multiple upgrades on points:
1. Once cause of over booking at VWL:
Booked a studio at VWL, when we tried to check-in, we had been upgraded to a WL 2 bedroom lake view suite. Called some family members to come and join us for an unexpected vacation.
2. Once cause of problem with check-in at AKL:
Booked a standard view studio at AKL-Jambo, checked-in, given a room key as the room was suppose to be ready, went to the room, and found suitcases and purse in the room along with the room not being made up. Went back to the front desk, they gave us an on-the-spot upgrade to a savanna view room in another part of the resort plus four free breakfasts.
3. DCL
We reserved an inside stateroom but were upgraded to an ocean view room. We did not find out about the upgrade until we got to the room, what a surprise that was. When our luggage arrived it still had the old room number's tags on them.
4. AKL-Jambo
Booked standard view room at 5 days out, due to a last minute change in home plans. Given a Savanna View room.

Congrats! How awesome for you and your family! I think this may be the second thread about someone getting an upgrade at VGF; IIRC someone was upgraded to a Grand Villa recently. I bet they are using open inventory to hopefully entice the recipient of the pixie dust into considering a purchase. RESIST . . . RESIST . . .

I have to admit when I saw that room I said to my husband, "maybe we need to buy some more points". He didn't agree with me, but I had to at least try!

For others reading, Disney will "upgrade" a DVC stay if they made a mistake, overbooked, or had to take a room out of service due to a serious condition.

DVC upgrades are not the norm where cash guests seem to get upgrades more often.

I agree. With DVC, while it's nice, it's not so much about pixie dust as it is about overbooking of some room type. Although you might say the Pixie dust is that they get you into a room when they've done that! With cash rooms it is more about pixie dust and getting placed into a different category if the hotel has the availability. We've gotten that more than once on cash stays.

We stayed 2 nights in March at VGF, and I was surprised at how much I liked it. We had stayed years earlier at the GF,and it just wasn't my cup of tea. I loved the TV in the mirror, once I figured that remote out!
