send a box ahead?

It's my first time cruising in December, so I am reading all the posts/notes/hints/suggestions like mad! I came across a note yesterday, talking about how you can send a small box weighing not more than 20lbs ahead of you, and where you can put things like beach toys, costumes etc.

Has anyone ever really done this? Please let me know if this is something worth exploring. Thank you!!!
