My DS is in 9th grade and has his first semester exams this week.

I am a nervous wreck.

:lmao:

Today he has English, Hon. Biology, and Pre AP Alg. II. Tomorrow he has Hon. Geometry.

The exams are all cummalitive.

Each exam counts as 20% of their semester grade. 1st 9weeks grade counts 40%, and 2nd 9 weeks grade counts as 40%.

How does your school count exams?

My DD(a senior!!!) high school exams are this week too, grades are cumulative for the semester and the final is 20% of your total grade(we are on block schedule so these classes are done) . Next year finals will be 25% of the grade, that seems a bit high for one test, especially if you don't do well on tests, it could pull down all the hard work you have put into a class.

What percentage it is depends on the school, the class, and the instructor; it works differently in different disciplines. I remember having some history classes where the final was 50% of the grade, and the other 50% was the paper that I had to write at the end of term.

We are on block schedule as well. Wow! 25% for the semester exam, that really seems like a lot. I hope your DD does well.

Our school sets the policy on how exams count and semester grades are averaged.

Your history class sounds more like a college class. Some of my college courses were like that but I have not heard of high school classes only counting a paper for 50% of the grade and the semester exam for the other half. Very interesting.

Sorry. But it was about school for Pete's sake.

are YOU a nervous wreck? How's he feel about his exams?

i WAS a nervous wreck but feel better now!

I just wonder if other schools count their sememester exams as 20% of your grade. It's interesting to see how it's done in other places.

He didn't sleep well last night. So he was concerned. And he has been studying night and day since last Friday for the exams.

I took him a lunch just now because the school isn't serving lunch today. What's up with that?

He was looking GREAT! Smiling, looking very relaxed. He said the English exam was a breeze. The Biology exam was much more difficult, but only a few questions he wasn't sure of the answer. He felt good about the test overall though.

It brought tears to my eyes to see how much more relaxed he looked. It was such a relief.

Alg. II this afternoon...

DD is in 9th grade too. The report card will have a grade for the first nine weeks, a grade for the second nine weeks, and also the exam grade. The 9 weeks grades are 40% and the semester exam is 20%, same as your sons. They actually assign points so you can figure it all out ahead of time. If you have 2 "A"'a, you have to get an A or a B on the exam to get an A for the semester (which is what the colleges see on transcripts). If you were to have 2 "C"s there is no need to even study as an F will not help nor hurt you.

She has A's so the poor girl is studying right now. She has had SO many projects and other tests this week that it was hard to find time to study for the exams.:sad2:

my DD is only in 6th grade, but she had 2 semester exams today (math and english) and she has 2 more tomorrow (science and history). it's been a real chore to get her to study-her BFF (who also has to take these same exams) is staying with us for a couple of days while her mom has major surgery, so all my DD wants to do is goof off. it seems as if i'm the only one who cares about the tests-she doesn't care if she passes or fails.

We are on a trimester schedule-which I MUCH prefer over quarters/semesters--so we don't have exams this week. 2nd trimester only began last week. Each class has trimester finals at the end of the trimester and how those count depends on the teacher. Some teachers use a total point system, some weight grades (which I don't like at all). The twins are in the same Spanish class. DD got an A and DS got an A- but he had more points right then DD but he scored lower on ONE assignment that had a 20% weight so it threw off everything :confused3.
